Doubles team picks up 1st and 2nd
Fort Scott High School's No. 2 doubles tennis team of Elijah Wright and Joe Adams has been performing well this season. This week, the duo picked up 5 wins in 6 matches in winning the division Tuesday at Chanute and finishing second Thursday at Pittsburg.
Wright and Adams sport a 13-4 record for the season. At Chanute Tuesday, they lost just 6 games in winning the team title.
Tuesday, they defeated Scout Lee/Brayden Frederick of Chanute, 8-5; Jon Miller/Thomas Elder of Iola, 8-0; and Isaih Smith/Lawson Medlen of Ottawa, 8-1.
Thursday, they defeated Noah Jackley/Logan Lazarcyck of Bishop Miege, 8-7 (7-1); and Brett Plumlee/Thomas Elder of Iola, 8-3, in pool matches in the six-team tournament. Jarrod Wilde/Caleb Dial of Pittsburg won the championship match from the Tiger duo, 8-3.
Meanwhile, the No. 1 doubles team of Alex Gorman and Micah Self continued their recent improvement. They won 4 of 6 matches over the two-day span to improve to 9-8 on the season after an 0-5 start.
Tuesday, Gorman and Self defeated Fisher Lund/Trey Kaston of Chanute, 8-7 (9-7), and Skylar Martin/Thomas Nowatzke of Ottawa, 8-1. They were beaten by Rhett Allen/Mason Key, 8-6.
Thursday, they defeated Caz Corredor/Gino Dodd of Miege, 8-4, and lost to Allen/Key, 8-2. In the third-place match, they beat Mac Jameson/Gage Riker of Columbus, 8-7 (7-4).
Alex Combs (6-7) played No. 1 singles on both days. Tuesday at Chanute, he lost all three matches. Colby Works of Iola and Carter McCullough of Ottawa both won 8-1 and Drake Gilmore of Chanute won 8-4. Thursday, Combs was 2-1 at Pittsburg and finished third. He defeated Lance Lau of Miege, 8-5; lost to Works, 8-1; and beat Noy Synakorn of Labette County, 8-2 in the third-place match.
Jacob Bailey (2-12) played No. 2 singles on Tuesday. He also was 0-3. Braden Robinson of Chanute won 8-1, Isaiah Fawson of Iola took an 8-4 win, and Matthew Schulz prevailed 8-3.
Levi Reichard played his first varsity matches of the season in the No. 2 slot on Thursday. He went 1-2. He lost to Miege's Chris O'Sullivan, 8-7 (7-5), and Fawson, 8-1, in pool matches but took fifth by beating Columbus' Toby Danner, 8-2.
The Tigers will be in Parsons on Tuesday for Labette County's tournament.
