Three winners at Paola Invitational

Saturday, April 9, 2016

PAOLA -- The medals were not as plentiful for Fort Scott High's athletes here Thursday as they were in the season opener at Labette County. But the Tigers had three individuals win four events that were for the most part by wide margins.

Paola's teams, plenty tough again this season, won both the boys' and girls' team titles. The girls scored 215 points and were the only team to score more than 100. Lamar, Mo. was a distant second, 136 points behind.

Paola's boys won by a slimmer margin, scoring 139.5 points to Lamar's 128.

Fort Scott's girls tied for fifth place with Spring Hill, each scoring 46 points. Tiger boys placed ninth with 28 points.

Cassidy Westhoff had two of the three girls' event wins. She turned in a time of 5:23.40 in winning the 1,600-meter run, with Spring Hill's Ashley Ingram well back in second place in 6:08.10.

Westhoff also won the 3,200 with a time of 11:39.41. Gabby Collins of DeSoto was second in 12:14.09.

Grace Willis was the girls' other winner, turning in a time of 2:42.50 in winning the 800 meters. Chanute's Nakia Palmer was second in 2:45.48 while Fort Scott's Kelsey Carpenter was third in 2:46.

The only other medal won by Tiger girls came in the 4x800-meter relay with a second-place time of 11:17.76. Paola was the winner in 11:03.82.

Fort Scott's boys only won four medals but Josh Hudiburg turned in a dominating performance in javelin, winning at 184 feet, 11 inches. The runner-up, Paola's Magnus Vanhoecke, finished in second place with his best effort falling just over 30 feet short.

Devin Brooks finished second in the 3,200 meters in a time of 10:25.76. He was also fifth in the 1,600 in 4:55.30. Spring Hill's Dylan Brenneman won both events -- the 3,200 in 10:21.38 and the 1,600 in 4:30.13.

Nick Woods rounded out Fort Scott's medalists with a fifth-place mark of 124' 6" in discus. Vanhoecke was the winner at 135' 1".

Fort Scott's teams will compete at Coffeyville Friday.

Only events in which Fort Scott athletes medaled are listed. If a Fort Scott athlete won the event, the second-place finisher is listed, regardless of school, for comparison.
