Track season opens at Labette County

ALTAMONT -- Track and field season opened here Friday with both Fort Scott High's varsity and junior varsity teams competing.

Fort Scott's varsity boys finished tied for fourth place while the girls tied for fifth. The JV boys' team placed second and the girls' took third.

Varsity girls had two event winners. Cassidy Westhoff won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:30, which was 17 seconds better than the runner-up, Layne Karhoff of Girard. Westhoff was second in the 3,200 meters in 11:42. Defending Class 4A State champion Callie Logue of Girard was the winner in 10:41.6.

Fort Scott's 4x800-meter relay team won in 11:31, just two seconds ahead of runner-up Fredonia. The 4x400 relay team was third in 4:40.6.

Grace Willis took third in the 800 with a time of 2:45 while Kylie Bruner was sixth in 3:21. Kelsey Carpenter was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 58.83 seconds.

Mallory Westhoff was fifth in the 1,600 in 6:35. Makenna Berger was sixth in shot put with an effort of 28 feet, 9 inches.

Varsity boys also had two event winners. Nick Woods claimed the discus crown with an effort of 151' 8", besting the field by 25 feet. Josh Hudiburg was fourth at 119' 2".

Austin Cook claimed shot put with a heave of 40 feet, 9 inches. Sean McIntosh of Coffeyville was second at 40' 3".

Devin Brooks came in second in the 3.200 meters in 10:30. He was third in the 1,600 in 5:03.

Vince Tome took third in the 200 meters in 23.02, fourth in the 100 in 11.04 and fifth in the 400 in 56.58.

Hudiburg placed third in javelin with a mark of 175' 9". Wyatt Tourtillott was fourth at 155' 3".

JV girls had two event winners. Lexi Bryant won the 800 in 2:49 and Paxsten Eads took the 3,200 in 13:37.

The other girls' medalists were:

* -- Abby Humble, second in shot put at 25' 7" with Kaylee Reyes sixth at 24' 3".

* -- The 4x800 relay team, second in 12:18.

* -- The 4x400 relay team, third in 5:11.

* -- Gracie Krokroskia was third in long jump with an effort of 13' 11", third in the 200 in 30.25 and fifth in the 100 in 14.28.

* -- The 4x100 meter relay team turned in a time of one minute flat in finishing fourth.

* -- Emma Davis finished fifth in the 1,600 in 6:46.

* -- Gabrielle Allen placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 1:02.53 and Gaby Clements was sixth in 1:02.55.

* -- Mackenzie Regan was fifth in the 800 in 3:20.

The junior varsity boys had six winners. John Montojo won the 100 meters in 11.90 while brother Kyle won the 200 in 24.96.

Morgan Stoughton won javelin with a mark of 132' 4" while Nick Lawrence took triple jump with a mark of 35' 4".

Gavin Smith won the 3,200 meters in 11:28 while the 4x400 relay won in 4:01.50.

Also medaling for the boys:

* -- Antwaun Martinez was second in triple jump at 34' 11".

* -- Makyn Wade was second in shot put with a mark of 34 feet and Andrew Callahan was fifth at 31' 9 1/2".

* -- Smith finished second in the 800 meters in 2:23.

* -- Kyle Montojo was third in the 100 meters in 12.06.

* -- Nick Shelton finished third in the 3,200 in 11:59.

* -- Jarrett Shoemaker was fourth in long jump with a leap of 17' 6".

* -- Briant Martin was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 20.03 and fifth in the 300's in 50.53.

* -- Callhan was sixth in discus at 84' 3".

The next outing for the JV team is today in Pittsburg. The varsity travels to Paola Thursday.
