Bollinger 2nd, Fewell 6th at State wrestling

SALINA -- Sophomore Derek Bollinger finished in second place while classmate Zarek Fewell finished sixth at the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament here over the weekend.

Friday's results were covered in Saturday's edition so this summary will contain only Saturday's matches.

Bollinger (40-7) win his second medal in as many years, finishing sixth last season as a 132-pounder. His only match on Saturday was the State final, which was a rematch of the previous weekend's Columbus Class 4A Regional final against Burlington's Colby Johnson. Johnson won the Regional final, 7-1, to remain unbeaten on the season.

Saturday, Johnson (45-0) put the wrap on a perfect season with a 5-0 win over Bollinger in the finals.

Fewell (39-10) began Saturday's work in the consolation semifinals of the 145-pound bracket, guaranteed of no worse than sixth place and a medal. Jonny Towbridge (37-5), the No. 1 seed in the bracket, won the semifinal with a pin with 23 seconds remaining in the match.

Fewell was then defeated by Pratt's Nick Lucas (35-8) in the fifth-place match, 8-1. However, Fewell won his first State medal in his second tournament appearance.

Four other Tigers qualified for State with three others still in contention as Saturday's competition began.

Freshman Tyler Gorman (31-13) started in the second round of consolation at 106 Saturday. He was pinned by Abilene junior Tanner McGivney (35-7), the No. 1 seed.

Sophomore Kyle Montojo (15-1) also began Saturday in the second round of consolation, wrestling at 120. He was pinned by junior Nathan Keegan of Louisburg (30-13).

Phillip Moran (22-15), wrestling, 126, was eliminated in the second round of consolation Saturday by Tonganoxie sophomore Gad Huesman (36-13) by an 8-0 major decision.

Junior Chris Stell (22-22) was Fort Scott's other qualifier but was eliminated on Friday.

The Tigers as a team finished with enough points, 36, to place 20th. Colby won its first team title since 2009 by scoring 120 points. El Dorado was second with 91 and Pratt third with 82. Chanute was the highest-scoring school from the Southeast Kansas League with 50 points, tied for 10th with Burlington and Holton. Fort Scott was the second-best SEK school with Independence tying for 29th and Parsons tying for 33rd.
