Lewis Richard Williams
Lewis Richard Williams, age 92, a longtime resident of Redfield, Kan., and recently of Guest Home Estates in Fort Scott, Kan., died Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, at the Guest Home Estates. He was born July 26, 1923, in Garland, Kan., the son of Burr Richard Williams and Nellie Post Williams. Lewis graduated from the Fort Scott High School with the Class of 1941. He later moved to California where he worked for the North America Airplane Factory. He later served with the Army Air Corps during World War II where he served as an upper turret gunner. While on a mission over Munich, Germany, his plane was shot down and he was held as a prisoner of war for 11 months. Following his military service, he returned home to Redfield and farmed and raised cattle the remainder of his life. Lewis was an active member of the Redfield community. In earlier years, he had served on the Co-Op Board and the Redfield School Board. He was currently a member of the Redfield City Council, the Redfield Ruritan and the Masonic Lodge. He had attended the Mt. Orum Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Nelda, of the home; a son, Ted Williams, of Nevada, Mo.; two grandchildren, Kevin Williams and wife, Bethia, of Carthage, Mo., and Kari Mills and husband, Gary, of Warner Robins, Ga., and five great-grandchildren, Emma Madelyn, Braden, Lyvi and Suzanne. Also surviving is a brother, Roy Williams and wife, Dorothea Sue, of Branson, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Esther Fitzsimmons.
Rev. Waylon Ingle will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 3 at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Orum Baptist Church or the Redfield Ruritan and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main St., P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
