Chanute boys break Tigers' win streak

CHANUTE --A 12-0 run to start the fourth quarter sparked Chanute's boys as they came from behind to defeat Fort Scott High, 48-41, in Southeast Kansas League play here Tuesday night, breaking the Tigers six-game winning streak.

The second-place Blue Comets (5-2, 10-5), winners of their last four, got back-to-back 3-pointers from Aaron Haviland and Kenton Richards to start the final stanza.

The Tigers (4-4, 8-7) didn't get their first points of the fourth until De'Vonte Robinson scored with 2:44 left to bring Fort Scott within 35-30.

After that, Chanute began making free throws to boost its advantage and increased the lead to 10 points, 40-30, with 1:13 to go.

Haviland scored 9 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter. Trey Lind added 11.

Grant Goldston came off the bench to lead the Tigers with 12 points. The Comets held Kaleb DeLaTorre to 8 points, only 3 of which came in the first three periods as they were determined not to let him beat them.

Others stepped up after Chanute got off to a 6-2 lead 2 1/2 minutes into the game. Josh Hudiburg scored back-to-back baskets for the Tigers to tie the score and DeLaTorre hit a 3-pointer for the lead with 1:25 to go.

Haviland tied the score to end the first period at 9-9. Each team scored just 5 points in the second.

Fort Scott outscored Chanute 9-2 in the final 4:10 of the third. Marcus Stepps put the Tigers ahead, 22-21, with a stickback of a teammate's miss. Goldston scored back-to-back hoops to end the quarter with the Tigers ahead, 28-23.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Fort Scott won the JV contest, 54-45, as Brady Tourtillott scored 21 points and Jesse Jones added 13.

Tiger teams will travel to Olathe Friday night to take on Heritage Christian in non-league play.
