No. 9 KCK women beat short-handed 'Hounds

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Fort Scott Community College's women took on their third consecutive nationally-ranked opponent here Saturday afternoon with just six players available. Not surprisingly, No. 9 Kansas City Kansas took an easy 77-45 win over the Greyhounds in Jayhawk Conference-Division II play.

The Greyhounds (0-3 division, 11-12 overall) were without starter Kamiron Luptak, the second-leading scorer in the division and Lillie Holtgrave, one of the team's better outside shooters.

Losing Luptak, who was named Jayhawk Conference-Division II Player of the Week for the third time this season for her performance the week before (Jan. 17-23), meant the 'Hounds were missing potentially 19-20 points before the game began. And with Holtgrave out as well, Fort Scott was able to dress just six players.

The 'Hounds hung tough early, trailing just 17-15 after one period. But the Blue Devils (2-2, 20-2) won the second quarter 28-8.

Kayleigh Haggard led Fort Scott with 15 points. Kaylynn Iseman scored a season-high 11 points off the bench. Sierra Roberts led Kansas City with 20 points followed by Erin Anderson, the conference's fourth-leading scorer, with 18 and Cheyenne North with 12.

The run through ranked teams is over and Fort Scott will have back-to-back home games this week. Wednesday night, the Greyhounds will face Labette (0-4, 2-18) at 5:30 p.m. in a Jayhawk Conference game. The Cardinals have lost their last 12 games and have not defeated another junior college since since the end of the 2014-15 regular season. Saturday afternoon, the 'Hounds will take on Brown Mackie (8-14) in a non-conference game that will count toward post-season tournament seeding as the Lions are a Division II independent. Fort Scott beat them in Salina on Jan. 9.
