Gorman, Fewell win titles at Paola

PAOLA -- Tyler Gorman and Zarek Fewell won their weight classes at the Paola Invitational here Saturday, which proved in some weight classes to be as loaded as any tournament around.

Gorman, a freshman, wrestled at 106 pounds and won his first individual title. He finished second at Bonner Springs the weekend following the holiday break.

Gorman (22-6) began the day with a pin of Natalie Garza of Great Bend. He took a 7-4 decision from Dane Erickson of Shawnee Mission East in the semifinal. Then he claimed a 3-1 decision over Ryan Ware of Wellsville, who came into the tournament ranked No. 4 in Class 3-2-1A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.

Fewell (25-4), who cracked the Class 4A rankings last week at No. 6, was one of three ranked wrestlers in the 145-pound class and he defeated the other two on his way to the title. He started off by beating Paola's Adam Cline by technical fall after building up a 20-5 lead. He pinned Braxton Schooler of Great Bend in the quarterfinal, then took a 9-7 decision over Reece Williams of Wellsville, who is ranked No. 6 in Class 3-2-1A. This was just the fourth loss of the season for Williams.

Fewell went on to take a 17-8 major decision over Michael Aldrich of Shawnee Mission East, who is ranked No. 5 in Class 6A.

Derek Bollinger, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A at 138, finished second. He pinned Jale Lowery, who was wrestling unattached, in the first round. He pinned Angelo Plakio of Topeka-Highland Park in the quarters and won an 8-6 decision from Gavin Cullor of Prairie View in the semis.

In the final, Keaton Sander of Great Bend, ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, took a 3-1 decision from Bollinger, who is now 30-3 on the season. Sander improved to 30-1.

Chris Stell finished fourth at 142. He won in the first round over James Wensel of Lawrence-Free State by a 4-0 score. He then took an 8-0 major decision over Matt Deitchman of Bishop Miege in the quarterfinal.

Brandon Miekus of Frontenac, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, took a major decision, 12-3, in the semifinals before he went on to win the tournament title. Miekus is 29-1 this season.

Stell (17-15) then pinned Ben Witte of Great Bend to move into the third-place match. Tre Kline of Prairie View won that match by a 7-3 score.

Nick Krebs (4-2) wrestled unattached for the Tigers at 152. Wrestling unattached allows extra competitors from a school into the bracket but their results do not count toward the team score. Krebs lost his first-round match to Cayden Domingez of Topeka-Highland Park, 8-2 in overtime. He drew a bye in the first round of consolation then pinned Kyle Taylor of Wellsville and Colton Rice, also wrestling unattached, to move into the seventh-place match. There, James Wensel of Free State pinned Krebs.

Jordan Crowder (14-13) finished fourth at 182 pounds. He took a major decision, 18-6, from Wellsville's Tony Dougan in the first round. In the semifinal, Alex Bejarano of Basehor-Linwood won over Crowder by pin.

That sent Crowder to the third-place match, where Isaac Schmidt of Shawnee Mission East won by a score of 10-3.

Daevin Caldwell (13-5) finished sixth at 113. He drew a first-round bye, then pinned Skylar Burkas of Great Bend. Bennett King of Free State pinned Caldwell in the semifinals.

Caldwell was pinned by Ethan Ewing of Wellsville in consolation. In the fifth-place match, Curtis Park of Bishop Miege won by pin.

Kyle Montojo (4-11) was sixth at 120. He was pinned in the opening round by Karl Scholz of Atchison County. He drew a bye into the fifth-place match, where Siam Boyd of Eudora won by pin.

Two Tigers competed at 132 pounds. Phillip Moran drew a first-round bye then was pinned by Corbin Nirschi, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Class 4A. He was one of five state-ranked wrestlers competing in this bracket.

Moran (7-4) went to consolation, where Taylor Wilmark of Wellington, ranked No. 5 in Class 3-2-1A, took an 11-7 decision.

Alex Gorman (9-14) wrestled unattached. He pinned Kooper Loy of Frontenac in the first round before Tate Steele of Free State, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, pinned him in thr quarterfinal. Gorman was then eliminated by Elijah Kennedy of Eudora.

Ryan Miller (2-8) wrestled 160 and was 0-2. He was pinned by T.J. Williams of Basehor-Linwood and John Gormon, wrestling unattached.

Trevor Hazlip (8-15) drew a first-round bye at 170, then was pinned by J.T. Ellis of Wellsville and Michael Rella of Highland Park.

Charles Pytlowany (4-6) was 0-2 at 220 as he was pinned by Jake Miller of Paola and Jack Carter of Shawnee Mission East.

As a team, Fort Scott finished in seventh place with 97.5 points. Prairie View was the champion with 128 points followed by Wellsville with 121 and Free State with 113.

The Tigers will travel to Frontenac for a dual which begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
