'Hounds roll by Westminister JV
Fort Scott Community College's men rolled past the Westminister College junior varsity at Arnold Arena Monday night, taking a 77-36 win. The Greyhounds improved to 3-7 on the season but two of those wins are over four-year school JVs.
The Greyhounds shot 59 percent from the field in the game, making 29 of 49 field-goal attempts. They made nine of their first 10 attempts on their way to taking a 27-8 lead with 10:56 left in the first half.
Fort Scott initially led 18-2 with 16:10 left, the only two Westminister points coming at the free-throw line. Jeremiah Fleming made three 3-point field goals in that run.
Fort Scott led 43-18 at the half. They were 17 of 27 from the field (63 percent) at that point while Westminister was just 6 of 29, going the last 3:24 without a make.
The teams traded scores for the first few minutes of the second half before the Greyhounds got hot from behind the 3-point line, making four in a row as part of a 14-0 run that made it 66-24 with 10:24 to go.
Evan Brull's 3-pointer with 4:51 left made it 73-26. Fort Scott scored only 4 more points but most of that was because the 'Hounds wanted to work on some things and get more playing time for some of the reserves.
The Greyhounds made 15 of 24 3-pointers in the game compared to just 2 of 19 for the Blue Jays. Fleming finished 5 of 6 from the arc while Dametrius Walker had four as part of an 8-for-8 shooting night.
Walker finished with a game-high 20 points followed by Fleming with 15 and Tyler Owens, who also handed out 5 assists, with 10. Javier Martin-Ortega was the only Blue Jay in double figures with 11 points.
Fort Scott will play its next 7 games on the road beginning this weekend at the Cowley Classic in Arkansas City Friday and Saturday.
