At the end of the first quarter of their game against Penn Valley (Mo.) Saturday afternoon, Fort Scott Community College's women had a total of 5 points, the fewest the Greyhounds had scored in any quarter this season.

Adrian, Mo., Sophomore Kamiron Luptak, the team's leading scorer so far this season, averaging 17.6 points per game, didn't score until the fourth quarter and finished with 3 points.

But yet the Greyhounds defeated Penn Valley, 64-48, on the second and final day of the Gladbach Classic. After making just 1 of 10 field-goal attempts in the first quarter, the 'Hounds put in 7 of 14 in the second and outscored the Scouts 21-9 to take a 26-19 halftime lead.

When Fort Scott was finally able to play the tempo head coach Katie Reihmann wanted in the second period, the offense began to click, taking the lead for the first time on Lillie Holtgrave's 16-footer with 5:38 left in the second quarter.

The Greyhounds (5-5) never trailed again.

"We are a very up-tempo team," Reihmann said. "The more we can get out and go and move quickly, the better we are. When we have to slow down, it takes some time for us to get into things."

Penn Valley (3-3) scored the game's first 6 points. Tabor Spurling's layup with 6:07 left in the first quarter put the Greyhounds on the board.

Kalynn Iseman scored the first basket of the second off a Lauptak steal. Fort Scott scored 7 of the first 8 points of the period with Emporia freshman Alexa Roush hitting a 3-pointer with 7:22 on the clock.

Roush followed Holtgrave's go-ahead jumper with another triple, her final basket of an 8-point quarter that was part of a 12-point night. She was averaging 8.3 points per game coming into the day.

"She hit a couple of shots that kept us going," Reihmann said. "We had so many people who stepped up tonight that kept our offense going."

Rachel Bush's only basket of the day, a 3-pointer with 14 seconds to go off a Jordyn Danzer pass, made it 26-19 at the break.

Holtgrave, making her first start in six games, started off the second half with another 3-pointer. But Penn Valley scored the next 6 to get within 29-25 with 6:36 in the third quarter.

Kayleigh Haggard converted a 3-point play to end the Penn Valley run. She also hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 17 seconds left to make it 43-36 going into the fourth.

Danzer was fouled on a drive and made it a 3-point play to start the fourth quarter. Alexis Byrnes hit a 3-pointer, then Luptak got on the board with a transition basket from a Tabor Spurling steal with 7:22 left to make it 51-38.

Haggard, a Colcord, Okla., sophomore, led the Greyhounds with 14 points, just a bit above her season average of 13.7. Danzer finished with 9.

Robraneque McGowin and Ashley Oneal each scored 12 points to lead the Scouts, followed by Alex Matthews with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Greyhounds shot 34 percent for the game, making 18 of 53 field-goal attempts but made 8 of 23 3-point attempts (35 percent) and 20 of 28 free throws (71 percent). The Scouts shot just 26 percent overall on 15 of 53 and were 1 of 9 from behind the arc.

Though the 'Hounds wanted to do a better job on the boards, Penn Valley won that battle 40-35. Iseman had 8 rebounds for Fort Scott.

"We were stressing rebounding tonight," Reihmann said. "We did get out rebounded again but I think we were rebounding offensively harder than we had all season."

The Greyhounds will be idle until Friday when they face Murray State (Okla.) at 1 p.m. on the first day of the Cowley Classic in Arkansas City. They will also take on the Saint Mary junior varsity for the second time this season at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
