FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Rivals to battle for TRL title
The Three Rivers League Eight-Man football championship could be on the line tonight when Marmaton Valley travels to Uniontown.
Both teams are undefeated in league play. Uniontown is 4-0 in the TRL (5-0 overall) with only Pleasanton left to play while Marmaton Valley is 3-0 in the league (3-2 overall) with Pleasanton (1-2, 1-4) coming up next week and a meeting with St. Paul (3-1, 3-2) in the regular-season finale.
A Uniontown victory could render that Marmaton Valley-St. Paul meeting moot as far as the league race is concerned. The Eagles would be one step closer to its first league championship since winning the 11-Man title in 2011. Marmaton Valley is looking for its first league championship since winning the Eight-Man crown back-to-back in 2011 and 2012.
Uniontown also needs a win to keep pace with Marais des Cygnes Valley or Waverly in Eight-Man Division I District 2 play. All three won their district openers last week. Tonight, Marais des Cygnes plays at Waverly (both are 3-2 overall), so one of them is assured of a loss tonight.
Last week, Uniontown rolled by St. Paul, MdCV dominated Marmaton Valley, and Waverly, behind a state-record 12-touchdown night (and 420 yards) by senior fullback Garrett Myers, ran roughshod over Pleasanton.
Uniontown plays at Marais des Cygnes next week. The Eagles host Waverly in the season finale on Oct. 29.
Kickoff tonight is set for 7 p.m.
