Junior varsity tennis concludes season
CHANUTE --Fort Scott High School's junior varsity tennis team completed its season here Monday and finished fifth out of nine teams.
Three entries finished fourth in their brackets. Britni Addington played No. 1 singles. She defeated Natalie Woolfolk of Labette County, 6-1, in the first round. Kaylee Bryant of Independence took a 6-4 verdict in the semifinal and Shelby Bubb of Parsons defeated Addington by the same score in the third-place match.
"In both of her losses she played well, made her opponent really work hard to win points and stayed focused and tough through many long rallies," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said.
Madi Larson and Addison Cunningham finished fourth in No. 1 doubles. They beat Victoria Frolich/Carlee Brashler of Coffeyville in the first round, 6-1. They lost to Jaryn Folk/Emily Gatewood of Parsons in the semifinal, 6-4. Maddie Badden and Alexis Pichler of Pittsburg won the third-place match, 6-0.
"Madi and Addison let a match get away from them that they probably should have won against Parsons. They need to remember that to be successful in doubles you have to be aggressive and control the net and at times they didn't do that," Barr said. "Both of these girls are ones that will probably be challenging for varsity spots next fall."
Abbie Houston and Aubry Terry finished fourth in No. 2 doubles. They defeated Jaylynn Schoenberger/Hannah Hugo of Chanute Gold in the first round, 6-2. They lost to Selina Stich/Nakia Palmer of Chanute Blue in the semifinal, 6-4, and to Xzavea Wommack/Lauren Baldwin of Parsons on a tiebreaker in the third-place match, 6-5 (7-3).
"Abbie and Aubry also played hard and made a nice comeback in their final match," Barr said. "They also fell behind 1-4, but fought back to force the match to a tiebreaker, but came up short in the tiebreaker."
Rebekah Sweyko finished fifth in No. 1 singles. She lost to Jenna Greer of Chanute Blue in the opening round, 6-2, but defeated Madison Giesen of Coffeyville in the consolation semifinal by the same score. In the fifth-place match, she defeated Megan Thomas of Labette County, 6-5 (7-5).
"Rebekah had a good tournament," Barr said. "She was hampered a little by a wrist injury, but she played hard and battled all day. In her final match, she fell behind 1-4 and fought back to win the set in a tiebreaker.
