CHANUTE -- Fort Scott High's pair of golfers finished well out of contention here Monday at the Chanute Invitational but progress right now is being measured in ways that the scoreboard does not fully indicate.

"Three tournaments left in the regular season before Regionals and we've still got some work to do," Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran said. "Definitely looking forward to four good days of practice to work on some specific yardage shots and, as always, chipping and putting."

Senior Maddie McCoy, competing in only her second tournament of the season as she also plays volleyball, finished with a 59 on the front nine and 61 on the back for a total of 120, which tied for 25th.

"Maddie McCoy is making some progress and getting her confidence back, slowly but surely," Curran said.

Camiren Defebaugh, who has been playing at the varsity level all season, shot 65 on the front nine and 59 on the back to finish 29th with a total of 124.

"Camiren is struggling a little right now, but this will be a good week to get back to the basics," Curran said.

Four-time defending Southeast Kansas League champion Anna Pool continues on her mission to become the first golfer in league history -- male or female -- to win a league golf championship four times. She shot 37 on the front and 39 on the back to finish with a 76, five strokes ahead of Labette County's Erica Gartner, who shot 41-40--81. Abbe Funk of Chanute was third at 47-36--83, her back nine the only other score of less than 40 in the field.

Uniontown had this tournament on its original season schedule but was not present.

Fort Scott's junior varsity will compete in Uniontown's varsity tournament on Monday at Woodland Hills Golf Course with play to begin at 1 p.m. The Tiger varsity will return to action at Pittsburg's Tournament Tuesday at Crestwood Country Club.
