Area golfers just miss medals
PARSONS -- Both Fort Scott and Uniontown sent teams to the Parsons Invitational here Monday. The Tigers only had two golfers participate while Uniontown sent five and finished in sixth place out of nine schools.
Camiren Defebaugh of Fort Scott had the highest finish of area golfers, shooting 52 over nine holes. She tied for 10th place but was denied a medal when Pittsburg's Logan Lord won the scorecard playoff.
Fort Scott's Maddie McCoy participated in her first tournament of the season and shot 60 to finish tied for 26th. McCoy also plays volleyball and that is her declared primary sport so she has missed prior tournaments for that reason.
The Eagles shot 250 as a team to finish sixth, one stroke behind Caney Valley. Frontenac was the tournament winner at 209 one stroke up on Pittsburg.
Kaylyn Crystal finished 12th for Uniontown with a score of 53 while Kyley Brown was 13th with her 55.
"Kaylyn had a good round for us," Uniontown head coach Jason Tourtillott said, "even though she felt like she left several strokes on the course. She was hitting the ball well just had a couple holes trip her up.
"Kyley was close to her season average but really put herself in tough spots off the tee box. Similar to Kaylyn, had a couple holes really change the outcome of her round."
Megan Smith shot 70 and Laryn Thompson 72 for Uniontown, which accounted for the final two scores that counted toward the team's total. Draven George, playing her first varsity tournament of the season, shot 75.
Coffeyville's Anna Pool, the three-time defending champion of the Southeast Kansas League, was the individual champion with her score of 40. Frontenac's Maggie Moody was second with a 42.
Even though Uniontown was the smallest school here -- most of the schools are in Class 4A and Pittsburg is a 5A school -- Tourtillott felt his team could have performed better.
"As a team we just didn't get it done," he said. "I felt like we had moments where it was coming together but we're lacking consistency at the moment."
Uniontown's varsity is in Eureka today and Tourtillott will send a junior varsity team to Frontenac's tournament, which is being held at Four Oaks in Pittsburg this afternoon.
Fort Scott is scheduled to send a JV team to Girard today. The varsity will go to Joplin Thursday for the Galena Invitational. Play at Schifferdecker Park begins at 3 p.m.
