Eagles reach semifinals before bowing out

UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown's baseball team prevailed over Yates Center in a first-round Yates Center Class 2-1A Regional Tournament game here Monday, holding off a Wildcat rally to win 5-4.

The Eagles went on to face top-seeded Rosalia-Flinthills in one of Tuesday's semifinals. The Mustangs won that game, 20-10, before losing to Colgan in the championship game, 14-4

Monday: Uniontown 5, Yates Center 4.

Yates Center (3-18) scored first in the top of the first inning. Uniontown (4-18) tied the score in the bottom of the second when Cale Coyan scored on a fielder's choice.

John Emmerson led off the bottom of the third with a single to center then stole second. J.P. Pearson reached base on a dropped third strike. Jesse Kuns followed up with a single to right, which scored Emmerson. Pearson moved to third on the play, then Kuns stole second. John Kuns followed with a double to center field, which plated both runners. Broderick Glessner reached first on a dropped third strike. Coyan walked then Clay Robinson brought John Kuns in with a single to make it 5-1.

Yates Center scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth. The Wildcats had two runners on in the top of the sixth but failed to do any damage. They had a runner on first with one out in the seventh but two fly-ball outs ended the game.

John Kuns (2-5) went the distance on the mound, allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits and 4 walks with 9 strikeouts. Robinson went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Colgan routed Marmaton Valley, 12-0, in the other first-round game on Monday.

Tuesday: Rosalia-Flinthills 20, Uniontown 10.

Flinthills (15-6) scored 4 runs in the first and 2 in the second. The Eagles finally got on the board with 5 in the top of the fourth but were unable to contain the Mustangs, who responded with 7 runs in the bottom of the inning.

The game was called in the bottom of the sixth after Flinthill scored 5 runs.

The Eagles finished with 8 hits, one each by eight players.

Colgan (11-11) won the second semifinal over St. Paul, 20-0, in three innings before beating Flinthills in the final to earn yet another trip to State.
