Hill recognized for becoming winningest Greyhound coach
nnounce that head coach John Hill has broken the record for most wins in program history. John Curtis, head coach from 1993 to 1997, previously held the record.
Hill broke the record during the 2014 spring season, but institutional record keeping had trouble proving out the achievement. This spring Scott Nuzum, sports editor for the Fort Scott Tribune, dug into the paper's archive to find that Hill had indeed broken the record in 2014 when he cracked Curtis' 168 all-time wins.
"Last spring we believed that John had broken the wins record, but we were lacking an official tally for an announcement," FSCC Athletic Director J.D. Ettore said. "We're glad to now recognize his commitment to FSCC and all the young men he coaches. His teams consistently perform above and beyond both academically and athletically."
As of April 13, Hill has a 222-166 record since he joined FSCC as head coach in 2008. Six of Hill's seven seasons have been above .500 and he has coached 11 playoff game wins in six seasons. Hill's win percentage is currently .572. Curtis had a 168-104 record and .618 winning percentage.
In addition being one of just three FSCC head coaches to post a career winning record, Hill has produced 28 Academic Achievement Awards (formerly Academic All-Americans). During the 2013-2014 school year, the FSCC baseball team finished with a team GPA. of 3.72, he second highest in the nation. Hill's baseball team also enjoyed the highest GPA in the Jayhawk Conference and Region IV for seven straight years.
Last year, the FSCC baseball team had seven players on the All-Conference Team and one player on the All-Region Team. Every sophomore was offered a scholarship to play baseball at a four-year school with six attending D-I programs, four attending D-II programs, and 1 attending an NAIA program. Sixty-seven sophomores have moved on to play baseball with a four-year program since Hill became coach.
According to Nuzum, the FSCC baseball team began playing in 1975 and had 949 wins going into Thursday's games against Neosho County. That makes this the 40th anniversary season of FSCC baseball. Fans should also look for the team's 1,000th win during the 2017 season.
Hill will be further recognized for breaking the all-time wins record at the Spring Athletics Banquet on May 13.
