'Hound softball goes 2-2 over weekend

Fort Scott Community College's softball team went 2-2 over the weekend in games versus Region VI competition at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex.

Friday, the 'Hounds swept Brown Mackie, 9-1 and 11-5. Saturday Cloud County came in and swept 7-5 and 7-0 in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.

Friday's opener saw the Greyhounds score in every inning played before the run rule kicked in after 4 1/2 innings.

Christa Merriman was 2 for 3 for the 'Hounds, scoring twice. Kaylee Bart, Rachel Zeller and Kylie Wilson were each also 2 for 3.

Bart was the winning pitcher, holding the Lions to one hit in four innings. She walked two and struck out one. Randi Glover pitched the fifth, not allowing a baserunner.

Greyhound catcher Alex Perez led Fort Scott's offense in game two, going 3 for 4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in 3 runs. Wilson was 2 for 2 and had 2 runs batted in.

Merriman allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits in the first 6 innings. She walked 3 and struck out 5.

The doubleheader on Friday was non-conference but counts toward Region VI Division II post-season seeding. Saturday's games versus Cloud County counted as conference and region games.

The Greyhounds scored first in game one, going up 2-0. But Cloud County (6-8 division, 10-8 region, 17-12 overall) tied it in the third and went ahead with 3 runs in the fourth.

Merriman and Alex Yoeman each had 3 hits for the 'Hounds (0-11, 2-11, 11-19). Kalee Ewbank had 2 hits.

The teams combined for 12 errors. Seven Fort Scott errors caused 6 of the 7 runs charged to Bart (6-7) to be unearned. She struck out 11 batters.

Fort Scott could only muster 2 hits off Kylie Trobee in the second game, one each by Merriman and Tyler.

The Greyhounds played home conference/region games against Kansas City Kansas Tuesday. They will face the Oklahoma Wesleyan JV at home this afternoon.
