Wednesday, April 1, 2015

Fort Scott Community College's baseball team split a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader with Labette Sunday and swept Wentworth Military, Mo., in a non-conference twinbill Monday. Both were held at Lions Field.

The conference split leaves the Greyhounds in ninth place in the Jayhawk East with a 7-13 record. They are one game behind both Independence and Highland, which are tied for seventh, and two games behind sixth-place Kansas City.

The sweep of Wentworth Monday brought the Greyhounds a game within .500 at 16-17. Fort Scott has won 11 of its last 14 games.

Saturday: Labette 3-1, Fort Scott 1-11.

Fort Scott's only score of the opener came on a leadoff home run from Kaden Shaffer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The 'Hounds managed just five hits off Chandler Minze (2-1), who didn't walk anyone and struck out 3 in going the distance on the hill. Dalton Rook, Jake Dyer, Mitch Sloan and Trey Hair had the other hits.

The first 3 runs of the second game were all Fort Scott's scoring on a pair of 2-out home runs. Rook singled ahead of Shaffer's second of the day and sixth of the season. Then Jake Whisler followed right up with his fourth of the season.

The 'Hounds added to the lead in the fifth. Hair doubled to center leading things off, then Rook was hit by a pitch. Shaffer plated Hair with a double. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Whisler and Nathan Methvin scored Rook and Shaffer. That made it 6-0.

The teams traded runs in the seventh, the Greyhounds scoring theirs' on a solo homer by Sloan.

Ryan Minton hit a 2-out, 2-run homer in the top of the eighth, bringing the Cardinals (10-10, 16-13) within 7-3.

Monday: Fort Scott 10-12, Wentworth Military 0-0.

Neither game went its scheduled length, the first game called after the run rule came into effect during the bottom of the sixth inning and the second game halted after 4 1/2.

Whisler's first-game, first-inning double scored Jedd Andrade and Schaffer to make it 2-0.

Andrade led off the bottom of the third with a double, then Shaffer and Whisler hit back-to-back singles, loading the bases. Methvin was hit by a pitch, forcing Andrade home. Shaffer scored on a passed ball, which also allowed Whisler to reach third and Methvin to get to second. With 2 out, Whisler scored on a wild pitch. Then Methvin scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.

Methvin doubled to left leading off the fifth. Sloan was hit by another pitch and Andrew Tanous bunted the runners over. Methvin and Sloan went on to score on wild pitches to the same batter, making it 8-0.

Malik Sams doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Shaffer singled, then Whisler hit a sacrifice fly to plate Sams. Methvin and Sloan hit back-to-back singles, the latter bringing in Shaffer with the 10th and game-ending run.

Shaffer, Whisler and Methvin -- the third, fourth and fifth batters in the order -- each had 2 hits for the 'Hounds.

Bobby Pierce (2-1) allowed 2 hits and 3 walks and struck out 6 in a complete-game effort for Fort Scott.

The Greyhounds had 12 hits in the second game. The scoring started in the second inning. Dyer and Gabe Franklin hit one-out singles. Tanous drove in Dyer with another single and Franklin later scored on a passed ball.

Four runs went up in the third. Andrade walked to lead off the inning. Shaffer singled with Andrade going to third. Shaffer moved up to second on a ground out to first base. Methvin's sacrifice fly brought Andrade in with Shaffer moving to third on the play.

Dyer doubled, scoring Shaffer. Franklin reached base on a dropped third strike. Tanous doubled to center to bring in both runners, which made it 6-0.

Hair walked leading off the fourth and Andrade followed up with a double. Shaffer hit a sacrifice fly to score Hair. Whistler singled to plate Andrade. Methvin followed up with a single and Dyer with a double, scoring Whisler. Franklin was hit by a pitch, then Tanous singled to left to score Methvin and Dyer. Hair came up again with one out and doubled to left, scoring Franklin to make it 12-0.

Tanous had 3 hits and drove in 5 runs. Dyer was 3 for 3 and drove in 2 runs.

Sams (3-1) allowed 4 hits in 4 innings of work. He did not walk anyone and struck out 4.

Later in the week, Fort Scott will have a chance to gain ground on one of the teams ahead of them. The doubleheaders both days will begin at 1 p.m. Independence, tied with Highland, faces Johnson County both days.
