Juniors to lead Eagle golf squad

UNIONTOWN -- Youth will be served as Uniontown's golf team once again enters the spring season without a senior.

That's not been too much of a problem for the program and head coach Jason Tourtillott and may not be again this year as a solid core of golfers will represent the Eagles.

Nick Reynolds, a junior, is expected to headline the team, playing at the No. 1 spot. He will be joined by two other juniors, Cole Rockhold and Dalton Clifton, and sophomores Ty Covey, Kalen Simpson, Dylan Carpenter, and Caleb Davidson, and freshman Dylan Ruggles.

"I think our key golfer this season will be Nick Reynolds," said the coach. "Then for our team scores, we will need consistent scores from Ty Covey, Dalton Clifton, Kalen Simpson, and Cole Rockhold.

"I would expect Nick to compete for an individual qualifying spot for state. We have several others that have that chance, with some hard work and dedication.

"It's early (in the team's preseason), so it's hard to see how much everyone has improved," the coach continued. "But in practice so far, Kalen Simpson and Ty Covey have definitely made improvements."

The coach notes that the schedule will again pose a challenge to the youthful Eagles.

"Jayhawk Linn is always tough and we have a hard time with them."

Yet Tourtillott, who is entering his eighth year at the helm, is optimistic about his group's chances for a successful season.

"I think we will be fairly competitive. We don't have any seniors again so we are young. Our strengths will be our short game and putting. Our weakness will be experience.

"For us to have a good season this year, we will just need to do what we strive to do every day, which is put the ball in play off the tee and limit our mistakes."
