'Hounds split with Cards; teams play here Sunday

PARSONS -- Fort Scott Community College and Labette split a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader here Friday. The homestanding Cardinals rallied to take the opener, 6-5. The Greyhounds won the second game 7-3.

The teams will play each other at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lions Field. The games were originally scheduled for today but moved back due to wet field conditions. Wentworth Military visits at 1 p.m. Monday.

The 'Hounds (6-12 East, 13-16 overall) held a 3-0 lead after two innings. Trey Hair led off the first with a double and eventually scored on Kaden Shaffer's sacrifice fly.

Jake Harvey singled with one out in the second and Jedd Andrade and Jake Dyer followed up with singles to load the bases.

Nathan Methvin grounded into a fielder's choice but that brought Harvey in. Andrade also came in a bad throw.

Labette (9-8, 15-11) got on the board in the bottom of the third when Aaron Davis hit a leadoff home run. They got another run in the bottom of the fifth as Dallas Alderton scored on a double by Dallas Peterson.

Josh Whisler singled to right leading off the sixth for Fort Scott and scored on a 2-out double by Andrade, making it 4-2. Labette got that run back in the bottom of the inning.

Fort Scott pushed the lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh. Hair led off with a triple to center and scored on Shaffer's sacrifice fly.

Labette got its first two runners on in the seventh when Peterson was hit by a pitch and Logan Gipson reached on an error. Gipson traded places with Ryan Minton on a fielder's choice. With 2 out, both runners moved up on a balk. Four consecutive singles won it for Labette. Eric Cueves plated Gipson. Davis brought in Minton, tying the game. Austin Giannola reached safely, then Luis Alvarado brought in Cueves with the winning run.

Andrade and Dyer were each 2 for 4 for Fort Scott while Hair went 2 for 3. Davis and Cueves were each 2 for 3 for Labette.

Matt Peterson (1-4) was hit with the loss for the 'Hounds, but none of the 3 runs he allowed in 1 2/3 innings were earned. He walked 1 and struck out 2. Cody Tolbert struck out 9 in the first 5 innings.

Fort Scott scored first in the second game when Hair singles to center leading off the game and eventually scored on Whisler's single. Mitch Sloan doubled leading off the third, moved to third in a wild pitch and scored on Hair's single.

It became 3-0 in the top of the fourth when Dyer's sacrifice fly brought Banman home. Labette scored a run in the bottom of that inning.

Fort Scott scored 2 in the sixth. Shaffer walked leading off and Whisler singled. Banman traded places with Whisler on a fielder's choice. Andrade reached base on an error, which allowed both runs to score.

Labette scored in the bottom of the sixth to get within 5-2. Fort Scott scored in the seventh when Hair singled leading off and Shaffer hit a 2-out RBI double.

Fort Scott scored in the top of the ninth. Harvey doubled with 1 out and Whisler brought him in with a single.

Whisler went 3 for 5 at the plate while Hair was 3 for 4. Harvey was 2 for 5.

Ryan McCullough (2-0) went the first 7 2/3 innings on the hill, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits and one walk while striking out 8. Banman came on and allowed one run on 3 hits. He did not walk anyone and struck out 2.
