Young Eagles' season already underway
UNIONTOWN -- Rebuilding with a young team is the task facing head coach Jeff Reed and assistant Brian Baker as Uniontown's baseball team was due to take the field for the first time Thursday in a tournament hosted by Northeast High School at Arma. Uniontown opened against the host school with Liberal, Mo., and St. Paul following. The third-place and championship games rounded out the night's action.
That begins a busy slate of games for the Eagles, who head to Yates Center Tuesday before hosting their first game at the school's field April 2 versus St. Paul.
Reed is in his second year as head coach for UHS. Last year, the Eagles finished 8-6 in the league, 8-13 overall.
Seven players return from that squad but, Reed cautions, "Only three saw significant playing time. We will be an inexperienced team that will have its ups and downs."
This year's team is made up of seniors John Kuns, Broderick Glessner, Allen Johnson, and Tanner Stewart, lone junior J.P. Pearson, sophomores Cale Coyan, Jesse Kuns, and John Emerson, and freshmen Colby Seested, Clay Robinson, Jacob Wiggans, and Treyton Church.
"We have John Kuns and Broderick Glessner who have pitched well over their high school careers," Reed said. "Cale Coyan and Jesse Kuns also pitched last year as freshmen and are going to find themselves on the hill more this year.
"Doing the little things right is going to be the key for us as a team," Reed summarized. "Everybody will have to do their job."
