Coffeyville sweeps; Baker JV visits

COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott Community College's baseball team suffered a sweep at the hands of Coffeyville in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play here Saturday.

Coffeyville won the opener 3-1 and the second game 11-6 as they kept pace with division-leading Cowley. The Red Ravens improved to 10-2 in the East, two games behind Cowley, and 17-9 overall. Coffeyville has won six of its last seven games.

Fort Scott, meanwhile, remains ties for last in the East with Allen at 2-10 and is 5-14 overall. The Greyhounds have dropped eight of their last nine games.

Fort Scott's only run in the opener came in the top of the fifth inning, tying the score at the time. Dalton Rook scored the run on Kaden Shaffer's sacrifice fly.

The Red Ravens broke the tie in the bottom half of the inning when Alejandro Hernandez drove in 2 runs with a 2-out double.

Fort Scott had 5 hits in the game, one each by Schaffer, Trey Hair, Nick Banman, Jake Dyer and Mitch Sloan.

Nate Westfahl went the first 4-plus innings on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and one walk with 3 strikeouts. Matt Peterson (0-3) took the loss, allowing one run on 2 hits and 2 walks.

The 'Hounds scored the first 3 runs of the second game in the top of the first inning. Hair singled to center with one out and Josh Whisler walked. Hair moved to third on a wild pitch before Banman reached on an error. That allowed Hair to score and Whisler to reach second safely. Whisler and Banman moved up on a passed ball. Then Nathan Methvin reached on another error that allowed Whisler and Banman to score.

Coffeyville scored 4 runs in the bottom of the second. The Greyhounds got a run in the top of the fourth when Jedd Andrade doubled with 2 out and scored on an error.

The Red Ravens scored 5 in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-4. Another 2 Coffeyville runs posted in the fifth.

Fort Scott scored twice in the seventh. Shaffer led off with a single to left and Gabe Franklin and Ethan Rosehill were both hit by pitches. Shaffer scored on a double-play ball and Franklin scored on a wild pitch.

Andrade went 3 for 4 at the plate for Fort Scott while Shaffer was 2 for 3. Hernandez was 2 for 4 with 4 RBI for Coffeyville.

The Greyhound defense committed 7 errors, leading to 9 unearned Raven runs. Matt Hicks (1-2) allowed 9 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 in the first 4 innings but none of the runs were earned.

Fort Scott hoststhe Baker University junior varsity today. Play is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
