Dr. Everett Max Coon

Dr. Everett Max Coon, age 81 years old, of Knoxville, Tenn., died at home on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015. Born in Prescott, Kan., on Feb. 2, 1934, Everett was preceded in death by parents, Ralph and Edna Mae Coon; sister, Ann Dillie; and son, Leon Coon. Everett is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nelda, who he met in high school and married shortly thereafter in 1952. Other survivors include daughters, Pat Hall (Darr) of Wyomissing, Pa., Mary Ann Condry of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mona Glandon (Tim) of Naperville, Ill.; sister, Mary Lou Coatsworth of Lee Summitt, Mo.; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Leon Holmes of Prescott, KS; grandchildren include Brandi Watson, Lindsay Rauhuff, Josh Cooper, Zack Condry, Katy Hess, Amanda Glandon, Cassidy Glandon, Will Coon, and Hannah Coon. Everett is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

After graduating from Kansas State University Veterinary College in 1958 with BS and DVM degrees, Everett practiced veterinary medicine for a 1-1/2 years before becoming employed by the USDA as a Veterinary Supervisor where he served for 40 years, retiring in 1995.

During retirement, Everett was active in a variety of hobbies, including playing the harmonica, gardening, calligraphy, and growing hybrid tea roses, once serving as president of the Holston Rose Society. He also enjoyed dabbling in the real estate business, believed in continuing education, and took college courses throughout his retirement. In addition, he and Nelda enjoyed many years of domestic and international travel.

Everett was an accomplished stained glass artist and he designed, crafted, and helped install the sanctuary windows for Norwood United Methodist Church, where he was a member.

Receiving of family and friends was held at Norwood United Methodist Church on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. with funeral service beginning at 4 p.m. with Rev. Bob Ruth officiating.
