Fort Scott Community College's women my just be able to slip into the No. 5 seed in the Region VI-Division II post-season tournament and avoid a match-up with one of the three powerhouses of the region. A win over Labette Wednesday was the first step and Saturday's 76-67 victory over Brown Mackie at Arnold Arena was the second.

If the Greyhounds (2-9 region, 13-16 overall) can win at Hesston Wednesday night and Brown Mackie (3-8, 8-20) loses at home to Labette, they'll finish tied for the No. 5 seed. The only problem is that the 'Hounds and Lions would then have no tie-breakers between them and it's possible the fifth seed will be determined by a coin toss.

But it's a chance. And it's better than no chance at all.

Brown Mackie came in apparently determined to live by the 3-pointer, going for the big shot 23 times in the first half. But the Lions made just 4 of those shots and 25 percent of their field goals overall in the first half (11 of 43). And the Lions weren't following up their shots, so the Greyhounds were getting almost all the rebounds.

Fort Scott had 40 rebounds at the half and the Greyhounds' clean-up work was paying off. Carlie Wilhelmi scored 8 points in a row early in the first half to get the 'Hounds up 12-3 with two baskets coming off rebounds of errant shots.

Emily Thorp made back-to-back shots to make it 17-6 with 14:21 to go. Jessica McAdams scored consecutive baskets and Sierra Shoulders scored off Emalee Copeland's steal to cap what turned out to be a 19-3 run over six minutes.

Bret McGuire's three-pointer from the right wing made it a 19-point lead, 30-11, with 7:47 remaining in the period.

Amanda Cicero stuck back a missed shot with 1:04 to go. Then McAdams scored with 32 seconds left to make it 41-26. Brown Mackie scored the last two baskets of the half on a fast-break hoop by Hannah Mortimer and a layup by Miranda Acuna.

That little bit of momentum continued into the second half for the Lions, who made 6 of their first 8 shots from the field and opened the second half on a 15-2 run with Fort Scott's only points coming from a pair of free throws.

Sierra Shoulders broke the Greyhounds' 0-for-7 shooting slump to start the half with 15:29 on the clock, which tied the game at 45-45. That started an 11-0 run which put Fort Scott back on top for good.

Brown Mackie had one more spurt left, though it would have been a better one if it could have hit more free throws. The Lions outscored the 'Hounds 8-2 to get within 64-57, but went just 4 of 8 at the free-throw line in that stretch.

Shoulders hit a 3-point shot from the right wing with 4:25 to go. Tiara Brown answered for Brown Mackie with a triple with 4:11 left that cut the deficit to 67-60.

Armanee Cross hit a 3-point shot for the Lions with 2:27 left to bring her team within 71-63. But that would be Brown Mackie's last field goal of the game. They got within 6 points when Mortimer made two free throws with 2:11 left but the 'Hounds kept them off the board for the next two minutes.

McAdams had a double-double for the Greyhounds as she finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kayleigh Haggard also had a double-double, going for 12 points and 10 boards. Wilhelmi also scoed 12 points while Shoulders and Kamiron Luptak each scored 10.

Mortimer led Brown Mackie with 19 points and Acuna added 18.
