JV wrestlers conclude season at Burlington
BURLINGTON -- The junior-varsity portion of Fort Scott High School's wrestling season concluded here Saturday with a tournament. Seven Tigers appeared in the tourney.
Mannie Gonzales won the 113-pound weight class (listed on the forms from Burlington as "Bracket #1). He pinned all four of his opponent who where, in order, Tegan Dillon of Topeka-Seaman, Tammer Murphy of Topeka-Seaman, Dody Huggins of Prairie View, and Huntyr Schwegman of Chanute.
Thomas Nighswonger placed second in "Bracket #14," which included 145-pounders, finishing second. His only loss came to Thomas Yurko of Burlington by a 10-7 decision. He pinned Isiasih Levy of Anderson County and Dylan Sparks of Paola. Finally, he took a 5-0 decision over Layne Watkins of Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail.
Hector Torres placed second in "Bracket #21" at 182 pounds. He pinned Lukas Yockel of Basehor-Linwood and Chase Young of Mulvane. He was pinned by Burlington's Tyler Breshears but took a 4-3 decision over Prairie View's Jesse Henry.
Greg Lorenz also checked in at 113 pounds but wrestled in "Bracket #5." He finished in fourth place. He lost his first match to Pittsburg's Corbin Russell by a score of 6-4. He pinned Paola's Matthew Bevis in the second round but lost by a 13-6 decision to Tim Lange of Topeka-Washburn Rural in the next round. Finally, Dakoda Orester took a 15-6 decision in the third-place match.
Bryce Wright wrestled at 132 pounds, also known as "Bracket #10), finishing fourth. He began the day by pinning Holton's Willie Bowman. Alex Denning of Spring Hill took a 13-10 decision. Dalton Mitchell of Seaman and Jon Rolf of Prairie View each pinned Wright.
Trevor Hazlip was fourth in "Bracket #18 or 182 pounds. He was pinned by Jared Jones of Eureka. He won a major decision from Paola's Isaac Cline, 13-2. Colton Moranz of Seaman won over Hazlip by pin and Cade Southard of Pittsburg won by technical fall.
Ben Daniels finished fourth in a 170-pound bracket, or "Bracket #19). He was pinned by Levi Kendrick of Southeast, Zach Martin of Seaman and Isaiah Harris of Pittsburg. He won by fall over Anderson County's Asa Young.
Team scores were kept in this tournament and Fort Scott finished in ninth place out of 29 teams with 68 points, one ahead of 10th-place Spring Hill. Seaman won the tournament with 185 points with Paola a distant second 100 points behind.
Though the JV season has ended, the varsity will go to Louisburg this weekend for the Class 4A Regional Tournament to be held Friday and Saturday. Friday's action will begin at 3 p.m. with Saturday's slate to begin at 11 a.m. Other schools appearing in the 16-team tournament include Chanute, Coffeyville, Independence, Labette County and Parsons.
