Fort Scott High's girls gave it a good effort. It's expected by teams in the Southeast Kansas League that on any given night, any team can step up.

And the Tigers, who came into the night in a three-way tie for fifth place in the seven-team SEK, gave league-leading Chanute a challenge early on before eventually falling, 56-43.

The Tigers (2-6 SEK, 3-12 overall) took the lead quickly with a Karlee Stanley 3-pointer putting the Tigers ahead, 3-2, 34 seconds into the contest. Elisha Hasenplaugh scored the last two baskets for Fort Scott to make it a 7-4 game going into the second quarter.

But after making just 2 of 13 field-goal attempts in the first period, Chanute (7-0, 13-2) made 7 of 11 in the second. After Hasenplaugh scored a layup to give Fort Scott the lead one last time, 10-9 with six minutes left in the half, the Blue Comets went on an 10-0 run with Paige Kidwell scoring the first 8 on layup and Anna Bagshaw topping it off with a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

By the end of the period, Chanute, ranked No. 3 this week in Class 4A-Division I by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, held a 26-16 lead.

The Comets didn't get another long run like that the rest of the way and the Tigers managed to get within 4 points with 2:20 left in the third when Emily Hale's 3-point play closed the gap to 31-27.

Hasenplaugh scored the last basket of the third and first one of the fourth to get Fort Scott within 38-33. The Comets pulled away as they held the Tigers to just a 3-point field goal and one free throw over the last 5 1/2 minutes of play.

Hasenplaugh, despite the loss, had an outstanding night as she made 10 of 15 shots from the field in finishing with 23 points and hauled down 13 rebounds. Stanley made a pair of 3-pointers as part of an 8-point night.

Kidwell made 8 of 11 fielders for Chanute as she scored 18 points. Bagshaw made three 3-pointers as she finished with 15.

Chanute made 42 percent of its shots from the field, going 16 of 38, and also went 21 of 29 at the free-throw line. Fort Scott shot 38 percent from the floor and only saw the charity stripe 9 times, making 5.

Ashley Cook handed out 6 assists for the Tigers, who also committed 19 turnovers.

The varsity hosts Olathe Heritage Christian Friday night in the first-ever meeting between the school's girls' basketball teams.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- The Tigers beat Chanute, 35-34, as Jenny Denton made a 3-point shot in the closing seconds.

Chanute had a chance to tie or go ahead with 2.3 seconds to go as the Comets drew a two-shot foul. But the Chanute player missed both shots. The Comets got the rebound but Maddi Cook blocked the follow-up shot to preserve the win.

There will not be a JV game Friday night. The junior varsity plays again Tuesday versus Labette County.

NOTES -- Freshman Tristan Gegg scored 32 points for Labette County Tuesday night as the Grizzlies defeated Parsons, 63-52....
