No. 5 KCK sends 'Hound women to 4th straight loss

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- No. 5 Kansas City Kansas rolled to its 10th consecutive win over Fort Scott Community College's women here Saturday afternoon, 79-48.

The Blue Devils, who top the standings in both the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division and Region VI Division II, have lost only two games this season and both were on the road to NJCAA Division I teams: No. 1 Hutchinson and Coffeyville.

The Greyhounds (2-8 East, 0-7 region, 11-14 overall) lost for the fourth straight time and the ninth straight time in region games. In their four recent losses, they've allowed an average of 86 points per game and lost by an average of 32.

Carlie Wilhelmi was the only Greyhound to get to double figures in scoring, finishing with 11 points. Cierra Gaines led KCK (9-1, 8-0, 23-2) with 16 points followed by Iland Shurn with 15.

Kansas City, which led 42-20 at the half, outrebounded the 'Hounds 49-34 and turned the ball over just 8 times.

The Greyhounds remained at the bottom of the seven Region VI Division II teams with five games to play before post-season play begins. While the top three teams in the Region --KCK, No. 6 Johnson County and No. 11 Highland -- are nationally ranked and have a total of 7 losses among them, Fort Scott still has a shot at gaining home-court advantage in the first round of the tournament by moving up to fourth. Currently Labette (2-5 region) is in the No. 4 spot.

It will be difficult for the 'Hounds to move up this week. They will be pitted against Johnson County Wednesday night at 5:30 at Arnold Arena and versus Highland at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon on the road. But their last three games will be against against each of the other bottom-four teams.
