Clarence Earl Meyer
Clarence Earl Meyer, age 96, a former resident of Fort Scott, Kan., and more recently of Springfield, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, at the Manor at Elfindale in Springfield. He was born Oct. 7, 1918, in Garland, Kan., the son of Carl Fredrick Meyer and Louise Gross Meyer. Clarence received his education in a one-room schoolhouse in Garland. He joined the Civil Conservation Corps and was sent to Fulton, Mo. In 1944, he joined the Navy as an apprentice seaman and later received an honorable medical discharge. He married Belva June Strite in 1940. She preceded him in death in 1974. He later married Ida Louise Kelly in 1975 at the Mt. Orum Church near Redfield, Kan. Clarence retired as a conductor of the Frisco Railroad in 1978 with 36 years of service. He was a member of the United Transportation Union No. 5 Retired and was also a member of the R.S. Prussia International Collectors Association and the A.A.R.P.
Survivors include his wife, Ida, of Springfield; three nieces, Carol Miller, Sheldon, Mo., Lucile Moore, Whittier, Calif., and Shirley Demmon, Trabaco Canyon, Calif.; two nephews, Richard Parrish, Clever, Mo., and Robert Meyers, Lancaster, Calif. and a special nephew by marriage, Robert Todd of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Marie Cloyd, Freeda Kalm Griffith and Ruby Parrish; and two brothers Jake and Carl Meyer.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Deerfield Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Orum Baptist Church and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
