Tigers sweep in first round of home JV tourney
Fort Scott High School's junior varsity basketball teams swept Chanute in first-round games of their home tournament at the FSHS gymnasium Thursday night.
Tiger girls (1-0) opened things up by scoring the games' first 13 points on their way to a 47-17 win. Fort Scott's boys followed up with a 58-38 victory over the Blue Comets.
Chanute's girls scored in the waning seconds of the opening period to cut the lead to 13-2. The Tigers led 21-8 at the half and 31-12 after three quarters.
Kharsyn Dwyer led the Tigers with 16 points, 10 of those in the fourth quarter. Kelsey Carpenter added 11 points, 6 coming in the third. Elizabeth Torres, Jenny Denton and Shytanna Reed each scored 6 points.
Fort Scott's boys (1-0) outdid the girls slightly by scoring the first 14 points of their game on their way to building a 16-8 lead after one. The Tigers outscored the Comets 20-4 in the second to make it 36-12 at the half.
The Tigers connected on seven 3-point goals. Austin Cook and Devonte Robinson each scored 11 to lead Fort Scott. Brady Tourtillott hit 3 3-pointers as he finished with 9 points.
Each of the teams in the tournament will play twice Saturday. The schedule:
