Stringer named East Freshman of Year
Five members of Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team received All-Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division and All-District honors from league coaches earlier this week.
Freshman Julia Stringer, a right-side hitter, was named the Eastern Division Freshman of the Year, the first Greyhound so honored since Kellye (West) Barrows received the award following the 2001 season. Stringer led all KJCCC-East hitters in hitting percentage, .340, and had 438 kills. She was also named First Team All-East and All-District.
Sophomore setter Kortney Blaufuss was also named to the First Team for the division and the district. Blaufuss led the division -- and is third in the nation -- in assists per set.
Sophomore Molly Hothan was named to the Second Team on the All-East team. She finished second in the division in hitting percentage and also has 133 blocks. Sophomores Terina Harris and Shelbey Baker were both named to the Honorable Mention list in the Eastern Division. All three were named to the All-District Second Team.
The Greyhounds advanced to their first Region VI final since 1990 when they faced off against Kansas City Kansas. The Blue Devils won the match but Fort Scott finished with a 31-9 record. Research of Google News Archives earlier this week revealed that the win total is the fourth-most in school history and the winning percentage of .775 was bettered only by the 1989 team which was 38-10-1 for a .786 winning percentage. However, it should be noted this compares two different eras of volleyball. Back then schedules had triangulars with best-of-three matches with no rally scoring. Current schedules have mostly duals and the high majority of matches are best-of-five with rally scoring.
Fort Scott head coach Lindsay Hill became the school's winningest coach this season. She has a record of 98-49 at FSCC, having passed Kerry Messersmith (73-28-1), now at Alabama-Birmingham, early in the season.
