Rose Frances Byrnes

Rose Frances Byrnes, age 79, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kan. She was born April 18, 1935, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Sylvester Henry Brenner and Florence Marie Coakley Brenner. Rose graduated from Wyandotte High School and from Donnelly College in Kansas City. She later attended the University of Kansas where she met her husband, Jim. They were married June 9, 1956, at Prairie Village, Kan. Rose later received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Pittsburg State University. Rose taught at Winfield Scott Elementary School for 14 years. She later taught for two years at St. Mary's School. In addition, Rose and Jim owned and operated J&R Sales in Fort Scott. Following retirement, Rose continued to work as a substitute teacher and as a volunteer at St. Mary's School. She was a member of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her seven children; Kathie Byrnes, of Carthage, Mo., Jim Byrnes and wife, Paula, of Shawnee, Kan., Kevin Byrnes, of Olathe, Kan., Steve Byrnes and wife, Mahani, of Kuantan, Malaysia, Juli Holland and husband, Bill, of Fort Scott, Roseanne Shaw and husband, Jeff, of Columbia, S.C., and Jennifer Stuckey and husband, Steve, of Fort Scott; 28 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother Ed Brenner and wife, Judy, of Lee's Summit, Mo., and two sisters, Florence Bernard of Richardson, Texas and Mary Theresa Morrison, of Paola, Kan. Her husband, Jim preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Frank, Bernard and Larry Brenner.

Father Robert Wachter will conduct Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14 at the Mary Queen of Angel's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel with visitation following.
