'Hounds win record 30th match
Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team set a school record when it defeated Allen on Sophomore Night at Arnold Arena Wednesday night.
The Greyhounds' 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 sweep was their 30th victory of the season, breaking a record set during the late 1980s under then-coach Kerry Messersmith, who is now the head coach at NCAA Division I Alabama-Birmingham.
Brandi Huesman led the Greyhounds with 11 kills on the night. She also had 16 digs to lead the team.
Julia Stringer and Molly Hothan each had 9 kills while Shelbey Baker had 8. Kortney Blaufuss handed out 37 assists and picked up 14 digs.
The matches also concluded Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play for the Greyhounds. They finished in third place behind repeat division champion and defending NJCAA Division II national champion Cowley and second-place Kansas City with a division mark of 7-2.
Fort Scott and Johnson County finished tied for the No. 3 seed with 7-3 records against Kansas Division II competiton, which consists of the 10 East schools and independent Hesston. Since the 'Hounds defeated Johnson on October 22 at Arnold Arena, Fort Scott won the tie-breaker.
Recognition of Fort Scott's sophomores, Blaufuss, Baker, Hothan and Terina Harris, followed. Each of them were recognized for finshing among the top players in the program's history.
Blaufuss set a record this season for assists with 1,383 and finished as the school's career assists leader with 2,592.
Harris totaled 1,071 digs in her two years at Fort Scott, becoming the school's all-time leader in that category. Her 626 digs this season is also a new school record.
Baker finished third all-time at FSCC in digs (741) and kills (491) in a career.
Hothan set a new single-season record for blocks with 120. That was also good enough to put her third on the career list in her only season at Fort Scott after transferring in from Pittsburg State over the summer.
Next for the Greyhounds will be the Region VI-Division II District N Tournament, which will take place November 8 at Kansas City Kansas Community College. That day of play will begin with a match between fourth-seeded Labette and top seed Kansas City at noon. Fort Scott, the second seed, will face Hesston at 2 p.m. The Larks (20-7) delivered the 'Hounds a stunning loss at Hesston on October 1. The championship match will take place at 4 p.m.
The District M Tournament will be held the same weekend at Arkansas City. Fourth-seeded Neosho County faces top seed Cowley at 1 p.m. Coffeyville takes on Johnson County in the other semifinal at 3 p.m. The championship will be held at 5 p.m.
The winner of each district tournament advances to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament, which will be held Nov. 20-22 at Phoenix, Ariz.
