Shirley G. Harris

Shirley G. Harris, age 79, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at the Fort Scott Medicalodge. She was born July 3, 1935, in Fort Scott, the daughter of Charles Franklin Ballou and Mattie Lorraine Bouggous Ballou. She married Leroy Harris on Jan. 26, 1954, at Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 2006. Shirley had worked for Key Industries and Western Insurance Company and had retired as a community liaison for the Southeast Kansas Community Action Program. Shirley liked writing poetry, listening to music, reading and doing arts and crafts. She also enjoyed collecting pig figurines. She was a woman of faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Kruger and husband, John and Terri Shelton and husband, Don, all of Fort Scott and five grandchildren, Leroy Kruger and wife, Christina, Brooke Bolin and husband, Ron, Heath Shelton and wife, Ashley and Haley Merriman and husband, Tim, all of Fort Scott and Shanon Byrnes and husband, Tony of Tyler, Texas. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Franklin Ballou.

William James Schafer will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery.
