Fort Scott High School's golf team finished second at the Galena Invitational, which was held at Joplin's Schifferdecker Golf Course Thursday, shooting a season-best four-woman, nine-hole score of 224. The Tigers also had three medalists.

"That is 24 strokes better than at the opening tournament at home," Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran said. "There are so many positive things happening on the golf course for these girls due to their hard work and dedication. So pleased to see it all pay off when they shoot as well as they did today. We are just past the half-way mark of the season and are hoping to peak at just the right time at Regionals.

"The tournament schedule slows down to just one a week for the next few weeks, so we'll finally be able to get back out to the home course and practice the shots that have cost them some strokes this week."

Frontenac was the team champion with a score of 219, followed by the Tigers, Columbus at 241 and Girard as the last complete team at 288.

Frontenac also had the individual winner as Maggie Moody shot a 41 to beat out Caney Valley's Ashlyn Hefley by 8 strokes.

Camiren Defebaugh shot 53 to shoot a personal best in finishing third. Emily Martin also had a personal-best as she shot 55 to finish fifth. Magge McDonald finished seventh with a 57 and Katie Brown missed out on a medal as a tie for 10th at 59 with Frontenac's Haley Tackkett went to the fourth scorecard playoff hole before it was resolved. Natalie Carr rounded out Fort Scott's results with a 60 that placed 12th.

The Tigers also played Tuesday at Oswego in a make-up of the Labette County Tournament that was rained out at the beginning of the season. Fort Scott was fifth out of the five full teams with a score of 237. Caney Valley was the winner at 178 followed by Labette County at 181, Pittsburg at 219 and Chanute at 226.

Martin led the Tigers with a score of 57, which was 22nd, followed by Natalie Carr with a 23rd-place 58, which was a personal best. Defebaugh finished with a 60 and McDonald had a 62. Maddi McCoy, playing her first varsity tournament, shot a 65. Brown missed the tournament due to illness.

Anna Pool of Coffeyville was the individual champ with a 36. Erica Gartner of Labette County was second with a 42.

Also during the week, McCoy and two others took part in Frontenac's junior varsity tournament, which was held in Pittsburg on Wednesday. McCoy shot 55 to finish fourth while Elizabeth Thurston was eighth with a 62 and Ashton Williams placed 13th with an 89.

The Tiger varsity is scheduled to play Monday at Chanute. The JV will play in Uniontown's invitational at Woodland Hills Golf Course on Sept. 29.
