No. 11 Blue Dragons roll by Greyhounds
HUTCHINSON -- Two Blue Dragon running backs gained 100 or more yards here Saturday night as No. 11-ranked Hutchinson dispatched Fort Scott Community College, 45-10, in the Jayhawk Conference opener for both teams.
Travis Custis, a transfer from Georgia Tech, rushed for 146 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns. Alvin Kamara, a transfer from the University of Alabama, added 100 yards on 12 rushes and scored once.
Hutchinson (1-0 KJCCC, 2-0 overall) outgained Fort Scott in total offense 658 yards to 294. Devin Taylor rushed for 207 yards on 40 carries for the Greyhounds (0-1, 1-1) and scored a touchdown.
Hutch got on the board first when receiver DeQuan Bowman recovered a teammate's fumble in the end zone with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter. Tymony Bonilla added the extra point and also kicked a 32-yard field goal at 13:19 of the second quarter to make it 10-0.
Bowman scored on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Kylen Binn with 9:57 on the clock to make it 17-0. Taylor's touchdown came on a 24-yard wun with 7:32 left in the half.
Custis scored the first of his two touchdowns on a one-yard run with 5:59 left in the half. Binn scored on an 8-yard run with fewer than 30 seconds remaining to make it 31-7 at the half.
The Blue Dragons scored all 17 points tallied in the third quarter. Kamara scored on a 41-yard run with 10:53 on the clock. Bonilla connected on a 33-yard field goal at 7:42. And Custis scored on another one-yard run with 3:35 remaining that made it 48-7.
Blayke Lindemann made a 38-yard field goal for Fort Scott with 12:57 left in the game. Binn scored on a 2-yard run with 9:36 left.
Binn was one of two quarterbacks Hutchinson used Saturday night. Binn, a transfer from South Carolina State, completed 11 of 15 passes for 148 yards. Dalton Demos, who transfered in from Coastal Carolina, was 12 of 14 for 142 yards. Fort Scott freshman quarterback Braxton Ross played the entire game and was 6 of 12 for 93 yards with an interception.
Fort Scott will host Coffeyville at 1 p.m. Saturday at Frary Field in another Jayhawk Conference contest. The Red Ravens, who have not yet played a conference game, routed No. 17 Ellsworth, Iowa., 58-13, at Coffeyville Saturday night.
