Gladys Miller

Gladys Miller, of Guest Home Estates, Fort Scott, Kan., passed away on Sept. 3, 2014, after a short illness.

On May 16, 1924, Gladys was born to John and Anna (Lieffring) McKenzie in Saint Joseph, Mo. She was the oldest of three girls. At a young age the girls lost their father. Not many years later their mother also died. This resulted in a lifelong close bond between the sisters.

Before her marriage, Gladys worked as a watchmaker and also as a photographer.

On June 28, 1947, Gladys was married to Joe Lewis Miller of Platte County, Mo. Joe was the oldest of six children. It was in this close family that Gladys found happiness, surrounded by the large Miller family.

In the early 1950s, Joe's Aunt Faye Moore, introduced them to a study of the Bible that would prove to be a guide throughout their lives. They were both baptized as Jehovah's Witnesses in Lawrence, Kan.

Gladys and Joe had three children: Anneta Jo, Michael Lewis and Lillian Evelyn.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her youngest sister, Della McKenzie Ackley Summers.

She is survived by her sister Virginia Castner, also of Guest Home Estates; her sisters-in-law, Sylvia Miller of Platte County, Mo., Mary Morrow of North Kansas City, Mo.; and her brother-in-law, John Miller of Smithville, Mo.

Also surviving are her daughters; Anneta (Robert) Bergland; Lillian (Jack) Grubb, all of Fort Scott, Kan., as well as her son, Michael Miller of Jewett, Texas.

She is also survived by six grandchildren; Tiffany Patterson, Tammy Thompson, Travis Ashworth, Tina Goss, Tierra Woods and Taylor Ashworth and their spouses. Gladys also had nine great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews that she dearly loved.

A memorial service, given by Greg Brown, will be held at the Fort Scott Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1280 245th Street, Fort Scott, Kan., on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m.

Interment will be at a later date in the Lutes Family Cemetery, Platte County, Mo.
