'Hounds improve to 8-2
Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team improved to 8-2 on the season with a 3-set sweep of visiting Longview, Mo. at Arnold Arena Wednesday evening in non-conference play.
The Greyhounds won the first set 25-8, the second 25-15 and the third 25-12.
Shelbey Baker led the 'Hounds with 8 kills in the match while Molly Hothan had 6. Kortney Blaufuss handed out 28 assists. Brandi Huesman served 4 aces and picked up 12 digs. Terina Harris also had 12 digs.
"We played well tonight," Greyhound head coach Lindsay Hill said in a media release. "We continued to push our speed and were able to beat them. Our sophomores stepped up tonight. Kortney is our quarterback, so when she is playing well, our team is playing well. We got better tonight, which is all I can ask for."
The Greyhounds also went 3-1 at a tournament last weekend in Vernon, Texas. In their first match, the Division II 'Hounds defeated Division I Seward County, 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24. Baker and Julia Stringer each had 12 kills. Blaufuss was credited with 43 assists. Baker also had 22 digs while Harris and Huesman each had 17.
In the second match, Fort Scott swept Division I Frank Phillips, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22. Stringer came up with 12 kills while Hothan and Sheri Middleton each had 7. Blaufuss was credited with 36 assists. Huesman and Baker each had 12 digs.
Division I Paris (Texas) needed five sets to beat the Greyhounds in the first match of Saturday's play. Fort Scott won the first two sets, 25-18, 25-21, before Paris came back to take the next three, 25-21, 25-20, 15-8.
Huesman finished wirh 12 kills for Fort Scott while Hothan, Baker, Stringer and Middleton each had 8. Blaufuss had 42 assists. Harris picked up 26 digs while Huesman and Baker each had 14.
In the final match of the tournament, Fort Scott swept Division III Richfield, 25-20, 25-10, 25-4. Blaufuss had 33 assists. Hothan picked up 12 kills while Baker finished with 9. Emily Bruce served 5 aces and Huesman served 3. Huesman also had 19 digs, Harris 16, Bruce 13 and Blaufuss 10.
The Greyhounds will be home again Friday night when they host Cottey College in a non-conference match. Play begins at 6:30 p.m. at Arnold Arena.
