9's, 12's and 14's in action this weekend

Fort Scott's 10-year-olds won't be the only local team in action this weekend as Cal Ripken State and Babe Ruth District tournaments will be underway across the state this weekend.

Fort Scott's 9-year-old Cal Ripken team is playing in the State Tournament at Garden City, which began today. This is a six-team tournament. Fort Scott will play in the second game of the round-robin tourney at 1:15 this afternoon against Parsons. They'll play at the same time Saturday against host Garden City and at 5:45 p.m. versus Columbus. The final day of round-robin play will be Sunday with Fort Scott taking on Derby at 4:30 and Cimarron River at 9 p.m.

Bracket play will be held Monday as the team with the best record in round-robin play will face the No. 4 seed at 10 a.m. The second and third seeds will square off at 12:15. The losers of the first two games will play for third place at 2:30 while the winners play for the championship at 4:45

Fort Scott qualified for State by finishing third at the District 5 Tournament in Columbus on Independence Day weekend. Columbus represents the district as the champion while Parsons, which finished second, and Fort Scott earned wild-card berths.

Fort Scott has a 12-year-old squad that will take part in the State Tournament at Wellington. This eight-team, double-elimination tournament also begins today with Fort Scott taking on Grant County in the first game at noon. Play concludes Monday.

Fort Scott also has a 14-year-old Babe Ruth squad playing in the District 5 Tournament at Frontenac this weekend. Fort Scott faces Girard at 7 p.m. tonight in the first game of the three-team double-elimination affair. The tournament will conclude either Saturday or Sunday, depending on whether or not an extra game is needed to determine the champion.
