Tigers score 26 runs on way to State
INDEPENDENCE -- Fort Scott High School's offense scored 26 runs here Thursday in winning the Independence Class 4A-Division I Regional Baseball Tournament and earning the program's first State Tournament berth since the 2010 season.
The Tigers (19-3) run-ruled Chanute, 14-4, in the first semifinal. Then second-seeded Coffeyville needed eight innings to get by Labette County, 8-7, in a game held up 45 minutes at the beginning for reasons unknown and again for an hour in the fifth inning due to lightning.
Fort Scott will be one of the top two seeds at State as the Tigers have the same record as the Andale/Garden Plain co-op program. If Fort Scott draws the top seed, they'll likely face Rose Hill. If the Tigers are the No. 2 seed, they'll play either Paola or Tonganoxie, which both have 14-7 records.
The tournament should be officially seeded this morning. The bracket will be available on the Kansas State High School Activities Association's website, www.kshsaa.org. The Class 4A-Division I State Tournament will take place at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina May 29 and 30.
Fort Scott 14, Chanute 4.
Junior Mason Knopp not only dominated on the mound, he was also unstoppable at the plate. Knopp was 4 for 4, belting 3 doubles in the win. He also allowed only 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 14 in improving to 7-0 on the season.
Zach Denton was also 4 for 4, driving in 4 runs. Jake Durossette and Jacob Payne were each 2 for 4.
The Tigers scored in each of the 6 innings played. Benjamin Labbe's single in the bottom of the sixth drove in Denton and Carter Young with the final 2 runs, which put the 10-run rule into effect.
Chanute (10-12) tied the game 4-4 in the top of the third. Fort Scott took control in the bottom of the inning, scoring 3 times on 5 hits. Knopp led off the inning with a double and courtesy runner Aj Smith scored on catcher Chase Brown's triple. Courtesy runner Drew Martin scored on a Zach Denton double. Denton eventually scored on an error.
Fort Scott 12, Coffeyville 3.
The Golden Tornado (14-8) committed 9 errors in the championship game, leading to 10 unearned runs for the Tigers.
Kaleb DeLaTorre was 3 for 4, driving in 5 runs and scoring 3 times. Knopp and Jake Bradbury each had 2 RBI.
Ryan Pickert (4-2) bounced back from a rough outing against Chanute in his last start. He allowed 11 hits but stranded 8 runners. He didn't walk anyone and struck out 4.
