Tigers sweep Chanute in doubleheader softball
Fort Scott High School's softball team swept its final regular-season doubleheader at Don Hewett Field Thursday, beating Southeast Kansas League rival Chanute by scores of 10-0 and 12-4.
The Tigers (12-0 SEK, 13-7 overall) will face Chanute (7-5, 11-9) again on Monday in the first round of the Fort Scott Class 4A-Division I Regional Tournament at Don Hewett Field.
Fort Scott led the first game 3-0 after three innings, then added 5 in the fourth and 2 in the fifth. The Tigers had 13 hits with two each coming from Katie Gorman, Kyenne Wade, Delane Gray, Taylor Krokroskia. Abby Denton was 3 for 3 and scored twice.
Kyenne Wade (11-5) pitched all 5 innings, allowing only 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 7.
Gorman and Riley Brown drew back-to-back walks leading off the bottom of the first inning. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Gorman scored the first run on a fielder's choice.
Karlee Stanley tripled to third leading off the second inning and scored on Bailie Brown's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Riley Brown singled leading off the third and moved to second on a passed ball. Delane gray and Taylor Krokrosika hit a single to load the bases. Stanley hit a sacrifice fly to bring R.Brown in, making it 3-0.
Denton tripled with one out in the fourth and scored on a ground out. Then Riley Brown drew a 2-out walk. Wade singled past third base, which allowed R.Brown to get to third. Wade moved up to second when Chanute failed to throw Brown out at third. A wild pitch allowed R.Brown to score and Wade to get to third. Gray hit a double to score Wade. Then Krokroskia singled to right field with Gray going to third. Krokroskia moved to second on another poor throw. Gray scored on a passed ball and Krokroskia moved up to third from where she scored on an error. That made it 8-0.
Denton and Gorman singled with one out in the fifth. Wade singled with 2 out to score Denton and Gray ended the game with another hit that brought Gorman in.
Hannah Geneva (2-1) made her first appearance on the field since April 4 when she went inside the pitching circle for game two. Though rusty, she went the distance, allowing 2 earned runs on 10 hits. She didn't walk anyone and struck out 4.
Fort Scott had 19 hits in the second game but was trailing 3-1 after 3 1/2 innings the only run to that point scored by Krokroskia on a Bailie Brown sacrifice fly.
The Tigers scored 4 times in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Stanley reached on a leadoff error and made it all the way to third. She scored on Bailie Brown's double. Denton singled to score B.Brown and went to second on the throw home. Gorman followed up with a single, then stole second. Denton scored on a groundout and Gorman scored on Wade's single.
Two more runs posted in the fifth to make it 7-3. Bailie Brown singled with one out. Denton doubled but Brown had to stop at third. Gorman reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Riley Brown grounded out to the pitched but that scored Bailie Brown. Denton scored on a passed ball.
Five runs went up in the sixth. Gray singled to lead things off and moved to second on a passed ball. Then Krokroskia singled and stole second. Stanley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bailie Brown singled to bring Gray in. Then Denton singled to score Krokroskia and Stanley. Brown advanced to third, then Denton stole second. Riley Brown singled to score Bailie Brown and Denton, making it 12-3.
Denton was 4 for 4 in game two with three runs batted in. Bailie Brown went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI. And Riley Brown was 3 for 5 and drove in 4 runs.
In junior varsity play on the south field at Fisher Park, Fort Scott swept Chanute, 9-4 and 9-0. In the first game, Emily Bowman, Abi Keating and Kassidi Soltren each had 2 hits for the Tigers. Lindsey McNeil allowed no earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.
Fort Scott scored 6 in the first inning of the second game. Camrien Defebaugh and Meghan Guss each hit home runs for the Tigers. Guss hit a 2-run homer in the first inning. Defebaugh hit a grand slam later in the same inning.
Bowman, Defebaugh and Skylar Winningham each had 2 hits. Defebaugh drove in 5 runs.
Guss allowed on 2 hits in 5 innings. She didn't walk anyone and struck out one.
While the Tiger JV finished the season with a 14-6 record, the varsity season continues on in the Regional Tournament. Monday's play begins with a "play-in" game between No. 5 seed Coffeyville (2-14) and No. 4 Labette County (9-11) at 3 p.m. Then the Tigers will face Chanute at 4:45. After that, at 6:30, the Coffeyville-Labette County winner plays top seed Independence (16-4) at 6:30.
The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday night. The winner advances to the Class 4A-Division I State Tournament May 30-31 at Salina.
