Charity golf tourney looks to raise funds for in-need parents

Last year, Steve Anthony organized a charity golf tournament to benefit Hunter Holly, a cancer patient, and raised $9,000. This year, Anthony is hoping to benefit local high school and middle school students with another tournament which he plans to hold at Woodland Hills Golf Course on May 24.

His goal is more modest this year, but the money raised should benefit many students in USD 234.

"If I raise $5,000, the plan is to split it between the middle school and the high school," Anthony said Tuesday. "The funds would go to in-need parents to purchase athletic equipment. It could be a pair of basketball shoes. It could be a baseball glove. The money will be earmarked for that."

Anthony hopes to be able to conduct a tournament every year around this time to benefit different causes. The idea for this year's tournament came just from a discussion with friends.

"A couple of friends and I were talking," Anthony said. "And we know there's a lot of people who can't afford some of the athletic equipment. And I want to see every kid get the opportunity to participate."

The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on May 24 at Woodland Hills. The fees are $65 per person or $260 per team. There will be a raffle for several prizes, including items autographed by Adam LaRoche, Jason Aldean and some of the cast of Swamp People. Tickets for the raffle are available now for $1 or six for $5 at the Spoiled Brat, 19 S. Main.

Hot dogs and soda will be served at the tournament. For more information, contact Anthony at (620) 215-2392 or Brian Lancaster at (620) 224-9507.
