Walk-off hit saves Friday sweep

Fort Scott High School's baseball team kept it's winning streak going in dramatic fashion in a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader at Lions Field Friday night. The Tigers won the opener over Labette County fairly easily, 7-2. But it took a "walk-off" single by Kaleb DeLaTorre in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the second game, 8-7.

The win in the second game improved league-leading Fort Scott's record in the SEK to 8-0. The Tigers have won their last 17 league contests.

After Labette County (2-4, 7-7 overall) scored 5 runs in the top of the sixth inning of game two, the Grizzlies held a 7-4 lead. Carter Young drew a bases-loafed walk with 2 out in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 2 runs.

Grant Goldston (1-0) allowed a walk to the first batter in the top of the seventh and a Tiger error put a second runner on with nobody out. The Grizzlies sacrificed the runners over but the Tiger defense got a runner out at home as he was trying to score on a single. Then Goldston struck out the last batter to end the inning.

Alex Fink drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Jake Bradbury doubled to left, then Jake Bradbury doubled to right to bring Fink home.

DeLaTorre then got a grounder through the defense and into right field, which scored both Bradbury and Durossette.

DeLaTorre went 3 for 5 at the plate for Fort Scott, driving in 3 runs. Bradbury was 3 for 4 and scored 3 times. Mason Knopp went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and Durossette was 2 for 4, scoring twice. The Tigers overcame 4 errors in the second game.

The Tigers scored first in game one as DeLaTorre knocked in Bradbury. But they didn't break the game open until the bottom of the sixth, when they scored 6 times.

Knopp (3-0) piched the first 6 innings, allowing one hit and 4 walks while striking out 6.

The Tigers had just 6 hits in the win, one each by Durossette, DeLaTorre, Knopp, Young, Zach Denton and Jacob Payne. Payne also drove in 2 runs.
