Betty Jean Carson, age 87, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the Franklin House in Fort Scott. She was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Fort Scott, the daughter of Lee Roy Monroe and Rena Jewell Morrow Monroe. She married John Henry Carson on Sept. 4, 1940, in Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 2009. Betty loved dancing at Buck Run Community Center. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ellen Wratchford and husband Charles, Fort Scott, Phyllis Arlene Shankel, Overland Park, Kan., and Connie Jean Alley and husband John, Fort Scott; one son, Lowell Hilton Carson, Fort Scott; one brother Merle Monroe, Fort Scott; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Ann Buford; two brothers, Edward and Bill Monroe; two sisters, Delores Ballou and Mary Ann Thurston; a granddaughter and a grandson.

There was cremation. Rev. William James Schafer will conduct graveside services at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, in the U.S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
