Tigers boost league lead with sweep of LC
Fort Scott High School's softball team inched closer to a Southeast Kansas League softball championship Friday night with a 6-0, 13-3 sweep of Labette County at Don Hewett Field.
With the sweep, Fort Scott is 8-0 in the SEK and 9-5 overall with four league games remaining. Two of those will be played Monday at Coffeyville, which was 0-6, 1-7 going into a Friday doubleheader with Parsons.
Independence, which Fort Scott swept earlier in the week, swept Chanute, 7-6, 5-3 Friday night to reclaim second place, Indy is 4-2, 10-3 while the Blue Comets fell to 5-3, 7-5.
Kyenne Wade (8-3) allowed just one hit in the opener and didn't walk anyone while striking out 9 Grizzlies.
Katie Gorman led off the bottom of the first with a single and scored when Riley Brown followed up with a triple. Wade's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
Gorman singled with 2 out in the second and Brown brought her around with a double to make it 3-0.
Abby Denton led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple. Gorman drew a walk and stole second, which drew a bad throw, allowing Denton to score. Brown walked, then stole second. Wade's sacrifice fly scored Gorman and Brown went to third on the throw home. Brown scored on a ground out to cap the scoring.
Gorman, Brown and Taylor Krokrosia all went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Wade also was the winning pitcher int he second game, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 9 more strike outs. She also went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Gorman and Karlee Stanley each went 3 for 4. Brown, Gray, Krokroskia and Cassidy Riley had 2 hits each. Stanley drove in 3 runs.
