Tigers keep pace in golf race
PITTSBURG -- Crestwood Country Club was the site of the second of four Southeast Kansas League designated tournaments here Tuesday afternoon. Fort Scott finished third in the tournament but remained in second place in league standings as the tourney champ was not a league member.
Iola finished with a four-man score of 315 over 18 holes. SEK member Independence placed second at 319 followed by Fort Scott at 338. Labette County was fourth, just one stroke behind the Tigers.
Individually, Iola's Kaden Macha was the tournament champ, shooting 35 on the front nine and 37 on the back for a total of 72. Independence's Logan Taylor maintained his lead in the SEK individual race although he finished sixth.
Macha has won both of the league tournaments but isn't eligible for the championship as Iola is a member of the Pioneer League.
The highest finish by a Tiger was Jonathan Allen's third-place score of 37-39--76, which was one stroke behind Calvin Hugo of Independence, who shot 36-39--75.
Had it not been for the non-league Iola and Columbus golfers, Conner Antonetti would have place ninth. With those included, he missed out on a medal after finishing at 43-41--84, which placed 13th. Tucker Horn shot 40-47--87, which tied for 16th. Dane Ramsey finished at 46-45--91 with Clayton Hixon at 44-47--91 and Weston Woodring at 64-72--136.
Independence has a two-tournament total of 642 which leads Fort Scott in the league race by 36 strokes. The Bulldogs added 19 strokes to the league lead they had after the first first tournament at Independence on April 10. The Tigers are just 6 strokes ahead of third-place Labette County, though that's one stroke farther back than the Grizzlies were after the first tournament.
Individually, Taylor has a two-tournament total of 156, which pits him ahead of Allen by one stroke. Allen moved up from a tie for third and gained 3 shots on Taylor. Keenan Nutt of Independence is third with a total of 159. Coffeyville's Logan Vacca fell out the tie for third into fourth place at 160.
Antonetti dropped one spot from sixth to seventh with a two-tourney total of 166. Labette County's Austin Krewson moved up from 11th place to sixth after shooting 78 at Pittsburg.
Horn also dropped one spot from ninth to 10th with a total of 172. Ramsey moved up two places from 18th to 16 and has a total of 183. Hixon moved from outside the top 20 into 19th with a total of 189.
The top 10 golfers after the four SEK tournaments earn First Team All-League honors. Those finishing 11th through 20th, including tied, gain Honorable Mention status.
The Tigers were to take part in a tournament at Jayhawk-Linn Thursday. Fort Scott will host the third league tournament, which begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Woodland Hills Golf Course.
