NEVADA -- Fort Scott High School's varsity tennis team went 4-5 in a best-of-nine dual here Friday. The Tigers won three singles matches and in doubles play.

In best-of-nine duals, six players each play one singles and one doubles match. Four of the singles matches were decided by 3 sets or less and one of the doubles matches was decided by a 2-set margin.

There were a lot of close matches, several which could have gone either way," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "This was a good opportunity for us to get into some close matches and have to battle till the end, a good learning experience for so many players on our team that really don't have that much match experience yet. We still hurt ourselves at times with inconsistent play and unforced errors, but as long as we keep working and improving as we near the end of the season, that is the goal."

Gage Addington (9-5) won his No. 1 singles match over Skyler Lanning, 8-1. Alex Combs (0-1) lost to Anthony Do, 8-6. Raifen Cruse (5-6) defeated Jordan Sheehy in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-2). Ryan Harper (1-0) beat Luat Vu, 9-7. Quintin Parsons (0-1) lost to Gabriel Gracia, 8-5. And Jacob Bailey (0-5) lost to Myles Coffer in the No. 6 singles bout.

Addington and Combs were paired up for No. 1 doubles. This was Addington's first doubles match of the season. Lanning and Do won by an 8-4 score.

Harper and Parsons (3-8), who are the regular No. 2 doubles team, defeated Sheehy and Vu, 8-6.

Cruse and Bailey, playing together for the first time, lost to Gracia and Coffer, 8-4.

Kyle Primeaux played three junior varsity matches. He lost to Nathan McCall, 6-1, in the first match but went on to beat Wyatt Mann and Dakota Sissick, each by the same score.

The JV was scheduled to go to Parsons Monday but that was called off. The next scheduled event is the Fort Scott JV Tournament on April 24.

The varsity goes to Parsons today for the Labette County Invitational.
