'Hound softball splits with Hutch

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

Fort Scott Community College's softball team split a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds' 5-1 win in the opener broke a 14-game losing streak. But the Blue Dragons took game two, 9-0, to salvage the split

Christa Merriman (4-17) allowed an unearned run on 5 hits in the opener, walking one and striking out one.

Lizzie Aller went 2 for 4 in the leadoff spot for the Greyhounds while Samantha Bennett was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.

The Greyhounds led 2-0 after two innings and 3-0 after three. They added 2 in the sixth and had seven hits.

Fort Scott was held to just 3 hits in the second game, one each by Kalee Ewbank, Akoda Black and Paighton Brock.

A non-conference doubleheader against Maple Woods (Mo.) scheduled for Monday was cancelled due to the cold weather and wet field conditions. With just two weeks to go in the regular season, it's not likely to be rescheduled.

These games also counted toward post-season tournament seeding as do all division games plus those against Hesston and Brown Mackie. Fort Scott stands 13th in the East at 3-19, 15th in the Region at 3-23, and 6-39 overall. Hutchinson improved to 10-14, 12-16, 15-21.

The Greyhounds will step back into division play this afternoon, field conditions permitting, against Allen. The Red Devils are in last place in the East at 0-24, 16th in the Region at 0-28 and are just 1-37 overall. Their only win was against St. Louis Community College on May 23.
