Maurine Louise Dodge Harward
Maurine Louise Dodge Harward, 100, residing in Hemet, California passed away suddenly Saturday afternoon, March 22, 2014. Maurine, born March 18, 1914 in Fort Scott, Kan., was the daughter of Fred S. Dodge and Emma Stratton. She was the last survivor of her siblings Ross Dodge, Leonard Dodge, Dorothy Dodge Hall, Hazel Dodge, Clark Dodge and Fred "Jack" Dodge. She is survived by her son Garn Scott Harward and his spouse Linda, as well as her daughter Jennifer Espejo.
She has three grandchildren, Matthew Espejo, Spencer Harward, and Hailey Harward.
Maurine lived her long life on several continents, residing in California, Texas, Kansas, New Jersey and Delaware, as well as abroad in Bermuda and Germany. She worked as a secretary for Mr. Sees of Sees Candies in the 40s, and later in life was a scorer for several years at the San Diego Open PGA Golf Tournament in San Diego, Calif. Maurine was a 15-handicap golfer and enjoyed the game well into her 70s. She also enjoyed painting in water color, and loved the sounds that emerged when she played her baby grand piano.
Her favorite car was her white 1963 Mercedes 250S, which she bought new in Germany, had shipped back to the US and drove and kept until her 90s. The speedometer broke in the 1980s and she estimated the car had several hundred thousand miles on it from driving all over the United States.
She was recently honored by family and friends at her 100th birthday and will be missed by all who knew her. She will always be in our hearts, may she rest in peace.
Graveside services for Maurine will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street, P.O. Box 309, Fort Scott, KS 66701. Condolences may be emailed to expressions@konantz-cheney.com.
