Coffeyville takes three of four in series

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Coffeyville took three out of four games in the season series with Fort Scott Community College's baseball team, winning both games in Coffeyville Thursday and splitting with the Greyhounds at Lions Field Saturday.

Coffeyville entered the weekend in a three-way tie with Cowley and Johnson County atop the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division standings and left it alone in first place. The Red Ravens won Thursday's doubleheader by scores of 7-4 and 17-7, which extended the Greyhounds' conference losing streak to seven games.

Fort Scott broke the streak in Saturday's opener, beating Coffeyville 5-3. The Red Ravens took the nightcap, 10-6.

Thursday's opener was tied 4-4 after three innings. The Ravens (15-1 East, 21-7 overall) scored 2 in the bottom of the fourth and once in the sixth. That stuck Matt Peterson (1-3) with the loss as he allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits and a walk in the last 3 innings. Miles Wagner allowed only 2 hits in 3 innings as the starter, but allowed 4 runs on 4 walks and didn't strike out anyone.

Jake Harvey and Austin Oakes each had 2 hits for the Greyhounds (3-13, 13-15) Oakes and Doug Jenkins each drove in 2 runs.

Jacob Spring drove in 4 runs for Coffeyville, 3 of them on a third-inning home run which tied the score.

The Red Ravens hit three more homers in the second game, scoring in every inning but the third. They scored 13 runs in the fifth through seventh innings, which caused the 10-run rule to take effect and stop the game.

Kaden Shaffer and Lance Barkley each hit their fourth homers of the season for the Greyhounds. Shaffer's was a 2-run shot in the top of the first. Barkley's was a solo shot with 2 out in the third.

Chase Rader and Spring hit solo homers leading off the first and fourth innings, respectively for Coffeyville. Kade Larson hit a 2-run shot for the Ravens in the fifth.

Barkley went 3 for 4 for Fort Scott. He was the only 'Hound with more than one hit. Rader, Larson and Alejandro Hernandez each had 3 hits for Coffeyville.

Fort Scott used five pitchers with starter Aaron Mason (2-3) getting the loss after allowing 9 earned runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

While Coffeyville's sweep allowed the Red Ravens to stay on top of the East, and Johnson County kept pace by sweeping Neosho County, Cowley slipped up. The Tigers were swept by Kansas City, which went into the day tied with Fort Scott and Highland for seventh place in the division. Until this sweep, KCK's only two conference wins had come against Fort Scott.

Likewise, Fort Scott's only conference wins had come against Kansas City until the win in Saturday's opener. But Alex Copeland's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth broke a 2-2 tie and Barkley plated Doug Jenkins on a fielder's choice to make it 4-2.

It became 5-2 in the sixth when Oakes plated Parker O'Dell with a sacrifice fly.

Josh Griffith went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Greyhounds. Oakes drove in 3 runs, 2 of which scored in a second-inning home run that gave Fort Scott a 2-0 lead at the time.

Landon Holifield (2-0) got his second win of the week, also getting one against the Baker junior varsity last Tuesday. He allowed one run on 2 hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out 3 in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Rader and Tyler Moore each had 3 hits for Coffeyville. The Ravens' first four batters combined for all 8 of their hits.

Coffeyville doubled its hit total in the second game and took the lead for good with 3 runs in the top of the third to break a 1-1 tie.

Coffeyville led 6-4 after five. The Ravens added 3 in the eighth on Rader's 3-run homer, his third of the series and second of the day. He went 5 for 5 and drove in 5 runs in the leadoff position.

Hernandez went 2 for 3, hitting a 2-run homer in the third inning. Taylor Davis was 3 for 5 and Roldolfo Oleta was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI.

Oakes was 3 for 4 for the Greyhounds. Barkley, Josh Griffith and Zach Taylor each had 2 hits. Taylor drove in 2 runs.

Coffeyville went one game in front of Johnson County (14-2, 23-5) despite the split as the Cavaliers were swept by Neosho County on Saturday and fell to second. Cowley (12-4, 18-7) was swept again by KCK on Saturday and dropped into a tie for third with Neosho County (12-4, 26-6).

Fort Scott is now alone in ninth place in the 10-team division. Kansas City (6-10, 12-15) moved up to sixth place and Highland (5-11, 12-16) is in seventh by itself now after taking three of four from Labette, splitting Thursday and sweeping on Saturday. Labette (4-12, 8-14) is one game ahead of Fort Scott for eighth place.

Fort Scott hosts a make-up doubleheader with Southeast Nebraska today at Lions Field. The first game begins at 1 p.m. Thursday, the 'Hounds go to Independence for the first two games of their four-game series. Indy comes to Fort Scott for the other two on Saturday.
