Tiger girls clinch share of SEK title; Dragon boys win

Friday, February 28, 2014

PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High's girls overcame some more adversity here Thursday night and defeated Pittsburg, 42-30, to win no worse than a share of the Southeast Kansas League title, their second in a row.

A few moments later, Coffeyville finished off a 78-61 victory over last-place Parsons to claim its share to the title. Both the Tigers and Golden Tornado finsihed the regular season with 10-2 league records and 16-4 overall marks.

The SEK doesn't use tie-breakers, so the fact that Fort Scott swept Coffeyville this season had no bearing on the outcome.

But senior point guard Maddi Allen injured her knee while helping out on a transition layup with just under 5 minutes left in the first half and missed the remainder of the contest. The injury will be evaluated later.

Allen scored the first two baskets of the game, a pair of 3-pointers, as Fort Scott jumped out to a 10-0 lead with 3:18 left in the first quarter. But Katy Short scored 6 points as Pittsburg (3-9, 6-14) responded with an 8-0 run of its own.

Allen knocked down another 3-pointer at the end of the first and Brianne Lawrence scored a layup and Ashley Cook hit a triple to make it 18-8.

Later in the period, Allen was fouled while making a basket in transition and converted the 3-point play by making the free throw, making it 24-12. Then Allen passed to Abby Denton in transition for a score just before going down in pain.

After she was taken from the court, the Tigers scored only once more in the first half, a 3-pointer by Cook which made it 29-12. Pittsburg scored the last 6 of the half.

Neither team was able to score a field goal in the third quarter until Cook laid one in with 2:09 left to make it 32-20. The teams traded scored the rest of the way with Bethanne Elliott bringing Pittsburg within 34-24 as the period ended.

Cook drove for a basket to start the fourth quarter and Lawrence scored on a pass from Ericah Shoemaker to make it 38-24.

Lawrence scored again with about 2 1/2 minutes left to make it 40-25.

Pittsburg's only field goal of the fourth quarter was scored by Elliott as the final buzzer sounded.

Allen led the Tigers with 12 points despite being unable to complete the game. Cook added 10 and Lawrence 9.

Elliott was the only Purple Dragon in double figures with 12 points.

Pittsburg boys 55, Fort Scott 40.

The circumstances were much different than Tuesday night when the new version of the FSHS boys' basketball team took the court for the first time. This time, the Tigers were playing their rivals on the road.

Though Pittsburg's 18-0 first-quarter outburst held up as the Purple Dragons (2-10, 5-15) broke a five-game losing streak, the game provided some experience the Tigers needed before they head into Sub-State play at Spring Hill next Friday.

The Tigers (5-7, 9-11) were only outscored 37-34 in the remaining three quarters, getting within 12 on an Alex Fink basket late in the second quarter, which cut the deficit to 30-18.

Fink led the Tigers with 14 points while Wyatt Reehl and Jacob Bradbury added 8 each.

Dillon Untereker led Pittsburg with 17 points followed by Montana Jajo with 12.

Both Fort Scott teams play at Spring Hill in a Class 4A-Division I Sub-State Tournament next weekend. The third-seeded girls face No. 2 seed Paola at 6 p.m. Thursday night while the third-seeded boys play second-seeded host Spring Hill at 6 p.m. Friday in first-round games.
